Chris
Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows XP or 2000. Paint.NET is jointly developed at Washington State University with additional help from Microsoft, and is meant to be a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with all Windows operating systems. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with GDI+ extensions.Paint.NET has many of the powerful features that expensive commercial applications have, including the ability to use layers. This is the second semester that Paint.NET has been a project at Washington State University, and we have the goal of adding as much functionality as expensive commercial applications provide, but of course, for free! In the spirit of all this freedom, we welcome any suggestions, as well as provide the source code free of charge for anyone who wishes to tinker with it. Please explore this website, download the software and try out many of the things you would do on those expensive commercial applications.More | Here

andsome
Unfortunately it appears that you have to install .NET Framework 1.1. I recently uninstalled this as it made me log on and was an irritant. I could not persuade the computer to boot up without this logging on business, no matter what I did to my settings. -pops-
I don't understand that, andsome. I have this NET framework thingy in my machines but I don't have to log on to any of them. The Paint.NET installed very easily and is looking very encouraging. OK, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of PSP or Photoshop but these are on their way.The best thing about this program is, of course, that it's FREE. There's no scumware attached to it either.

Guest be@vis
I got the same problem as andsome plus it removed all my file associations, maybe it's to do with the fact that I've removed "Internet Explorer" from my system. Pity, it seemed like a good programme. I think I'll stick with "Photoshop" and "The Gimp".
andsome
Don't know what to do for the best now. I decided to try the program so I installed it together with .NET Framework. Naturally I was once again in the situation of having to log on when starting up the computer. I did as has been suggested in the forum to get rid of this log on screen and could not start the computer at all other than in Safe mode, It would not go past a blue window that said Windows is starting up. After messing about for ages, I can now start the computer but am now back to logging on every time. I cannot make up my mind whether to uninstall the program or not. Instructions for getting rid of the log on screen seem a little ambiguous, and I am obviously doing something wrong.
rong
Sorry I can't remember how I did it, but I think I clicked on the account it made and changed or removed it.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Andsome: I personally think it is better if you login with a password to your Windows session. There are several reasons for this, but I won't go into this here.I suggest that you change your settings to automatic logon at startup. (Can't remember exactly how to do this, but I'm sure someone here can give details).[added]: maybe here http://www.windowsforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=15554
andsome
As it's only 'Er indoors or me that uses the computer, I have always been happy with it just booting up automatically without a password. I just find it mildly irritating. I have followed the instructions to get rid of this pain, but the computer then would not go past the Windows is starting up blue screen. I had to use safe mode, and had quite a problem getting things back to normal. I obviously did something wrong. When I followed the instructions given here, I went wrong somewhere. I clicked to get rid of the requirement to log on, but was then presented with a window asking who should log on automatically, and to enter a password. This is where I think I did the wrong thing. nellie2
Just looking at this, it says that it is meant to be a replacement for MS Paint. Does this mean that if I install it I lose Paint? I know Paint is basic, but sometimes I like a basic application.
-pops-
No, Paint is still there. The new program is a vast improvement over MS Paint - tending more towards PSP or Photoshop.

Other than this little problem after downloading the .Net update, I am very happy with my computer at present, but it could be useful from time to time.
