homecomputeraid
Make sure you don't have anything unnecessary running in the background (use msconfig, startup tab, and turn off unneeded programs). Uninstall unneeded software through Add/Remove Programs.
deuces wild
For speeding up your internet, check out my freeware post at the bottom of this thread. It is called TCP Doctor (cable/DSL only)I would advise caution when using this program. I have heard of countless stories of the program actually slowing down cable connection connection speeds. It may also be illegal to alter upload/download speeds and you may face a penalty by your cable company if caught. Not trying to be a goody two shoes on this. Just offering a word or two of caution. :P
Zfactor
The website has tools for you to set it up correctly (it is the dslreports.com, now broadbandreports.com). Specificall there is a tool that you can run and it suggests settings for you. Obviously you would write down your defualt settings before making any changes, but in my experiences, my cable speed increased by 1.0 Meg/Sec from using this tool alone. As for the legal problem... I have never heard of any such thing, but I suppose it is possible.
