WestRat Posted January 28, 2005 Report Share Posted January 28, 2005 I have recently un-installed Internet explorer as I was having problems and wanted to do a clean install. The IE folder in program files is now empty, however .html and .htm files are still opening in internet explorer,so it seems that there is another copy somewhere. I have searched extensively and also trawled through the registry looking for referances to this, but can not find it. Also tried an applicaton/process monitor program but this just gave- internet explorer running but with no location.These are the entries for (.HTML) extension in Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types/.HTML/Open- which are the same as the entries at Registry- Root/htmlfile/shell/&Open &Open"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" %1[ViewFolder("%l","%l",%S)]Folders*AppPropertiesC;\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe does not currently exist- Just a totally empty folder Can somebody please tell me whats happening here please. Any solutions explanations suggestions etc. much appreciated as my knowledge is fairly limited Thanks WestRat P.S. I don't know about ME, but you should be able to run your system disc, and it will replace missing or damaged files. Scarecrow Man Posted January 28, 2005 Report Share Posted January 28, 2005 If you open an explorer window (just open my computer)click Tools> Folder Optionsclick the File Types tab, and scroll down to .html and .htm and click the change button to change the default program it opens with. Zfactor Posted January 29, 2005 Report Share Posted January 29, 2005 Also, as far as I know, the only browser you are allowed to use for Windows Update is IE, but that is based on limited knowlege, somebody else might know this for sure. I used to use Netscape for a number of years before Microsoft came along with their own (NCSA's) bowser. The novelty at the time was that this browser was free... I must say that I do prefer OE.Well, Netscape at that time and OE today is probably a bit different. But of course, what one likes is entirely up to every user. It also depends a bit what you do with it:I use (and like) Outlook 2003 for my corporate Exchange Server mail.I use (and like) Mozilla Thunderbird for my private IMAP mail.I tried Thunderbird for newsgroup browsing, but the search/find functionality is terrible. Even if you open "My Computer", it opens in an internet explorer subshell. I just don't like the idea of my File Manager doubling as my Web Browser... kind of makes me uneasy...
