No where near harsh enough. Ten years would be more like it. It's bad enough for us if we get our computers down because of idiots like this. The real problem occurs with potential loss of life with compromised computers in the emergency services, Air traffic control, nuclear power stations, hospitals etc etc.

Well, as much as we love to hate virus writers, He is only a 19 year old kid. Giving a 19 year old 10 years is pretty harsh. I am sure we all did things as children that we should have gone to jail for if we were caught (even if we don't want to admit it), but 10 years would let him out at age 30. IMO, 5 years would be more reasonable, that way its a major inconvenience but it doesn't totally destroy somebody's life who was obviously depraved and had no support from home. I mean, one click to send it and that was it. So for one day where he made a mistake or whatever, he gets 10 years. It was not the kid who spread it, but people who should not own computers.

Also, many of the people who got the virus were people too lazy to take the time to learn how to operate a computer or protect themselves for viruses. I say that if you are going to half-ass it, then you deserve to fail.

Of course, this is only my opinion.

-Addition- Also, alot of people get viruses from illegal websites that they are trying to download copyrighted stuff off of, only they are too stupid to realize that its a hoax intended to mess up your computer. Those people totally deserve it.

Also, if this virus did infect vital computers that cost lives, then he would have been brought up on involuntary manslaughter charges or something of that sort, and you KNOW the prosecutor was looking for any and all ways to add time to the sentence.

Personally, I think the real criminals here are Microsoft, for allowing this to happen. Had they rated the update that would've fixed that as "Critical", people's Automatic Update would've gotten it. Or how about pushing for computer literacy, instead or dumbing computers down, so people know to run windows update.

That said, the kid should do time, and 18 months I say is sufficient.
