Could this be missing files??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys... :D

Im having problems installing pretty much everything at the moment..<sigh>

Ive inherited this PC from my sister...and although i know it was legit..I dont have any paperwork...the only thing it came with is a Boot disc and a system driver CD.

Neither of these has the drivers for the hardware I'm trying to install.

Ive tried to install a HP850 printer and i would of assumed this would of automatically loaded with XP SP1 ?

Ive tried to load my new digicam which is supposed to be a smart installation...no joy :(

and the latest grief is... Ive just had my AOL BB modem delivered and that wont install either

the message i get is...

BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem Setup Wizard

Error

There is a problem installing the drivers for yr modem:

The operating system could not install the driver properly.

Please call technical support for assistance

Ive rang AOL...and eventually..(after making some new friends in India and Ireland)..... got told that it was a systems problem and that i would have to reformat my computer....

Is it just missing files.....or how do i even start to resolve this problem...???

(and there was me....wanting to so step into the 21st century

 :wallbash:

Btw...Im pretty much a newbie...so pls be gentle with me ;)

Helpppppppppppppppppppppppppp lol

You have followed the AOL installation instructions properly haven't you?

I have found that if I don't plug the blue USB cable when the message comes up on screen, the modem drivers don't install properly i.e. if you plug the USB cable in before or after you see the message.

If you have followed the installation instructions properly, then the only other thing I can recommend is to uninstall the (faulty) modem drivers, reboot the computer and run a registry cleaner and then try re-installing again.

As AOL provide a FREE helpline, if you still have further trouble then don't hesitate to contact them again and if you don't get any help then threaten to send the modem back and cancel the contract as you have a cooling-off period!

That should get them to spring into action, as the thought of losing a customer will shake them up a bit :D

Just for the record, I have had no problems when I installed my BT Voyager 100 modem drivers!

Hi Curly....Thankyou for yr prompt reply...

Yes i have installed it totally properly....(many times now ...eeeeeek)

You say uninstall the faulty drivers...yet how can i uninstall something that doesnt complete, surely that means its not installed? (note the above wizard setup error note)

I have spent many hours on AOL's FREE helpline, and spoke to quite a few of their technicians, going round and round in circles...until i got hold of a senior technician (grade2), who said i had exhausted their usual 'fixes'. Hence the prompt to reformat.

If they say thats the answer..

Whats the cheapest way i can reformat...?

This is obviously one of those cheap computers that only comes with not the full package or something.... (like i come with half a brain..lol)

gosh...im so confused and frustrated here...this has been going on for 3 weeks now ...

Any more ideas at all?

Thanx ...hope yr enjoying yr w/end....

Yeah, you are probably right as if the installation process doesn't complete, then it probably won't be in the Add/remove programs section!

I would try using a registry cleaner though, as you say you have been having problems for 3 weeks :o

I wonder if your registry is full of 'errors' which may be the cause?

Have you been in Device Manager and looked for 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' as there shouldn't be any yellow exclamation marks there?

AOL are known for telling you to format the computer when things go wrong according to reports!

I am sorry but I don't know what else to suggest apart from threatening to send the modem back and cancelling your contract if you are within the cooling off-period!

There's no way I would put up with that for 3 weeks, as I would have cancelled my contract and changed ISP's!

I hope you either get it sorted or find another ISP ;)

Right Curly....Thankyou once more...

Went into device manager...no yellow exclamation marks on USB controllers but yellow ? on 'other devices'..namely Modem audio device......Does that mean anything at all?

:o) x

I am no expert but I think that a modem audio device is a standard 56k modem.

What I would do is take it out completely or disable it in Device Manager.

What is the exact error that you get in Device Manager if it isn't already disabled?

I also think that you need to select 'Never dial a connection' as this refers to a 56k modem and not an ADSL modem.

This option is in Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections, as that's what I have on my PC (See screenshot)

Or you can go to AOL keyword 'broadband drivers'

I will leave you in the capable hands of mark2 as he has more computer experience than me.  :)

  :D a little perhaps, but I think you, Curly, have more experience with USB modem drivers and AOL.

I think it is best to try to get all the drivers in device mangler installed correctly.

However, unless we have the XP disc or know the location of the reinstall files we're not going to be able to look at a format scenario, without these we can't even run sfc to check for missing/corrupt files

:(

Teatimecreams, are you on AOL now?

If so have you tried downloading the latest BT Voyager modem drivers at AOL keyword 'Broadband drivers'?

When I first had broadband nearly 2 years ago, I used the modem drivers on the enclosed CD and I kept getting disconnected

After going to the 'live help' option, I was advised to download the latest modem drivers and ever since I have had no more problems!

I regularly check that there isn't a newer version available now.

Wouldnt that be because im using the dialup modem to be online typing this?

Ive tried disabling that and then re-installing BB...still doesnt complete the install....In my other life i think i was a dog....because ive done so much chasing round and round these past few weeks....lol

Any other ideas...?

Have you done what is mentioned in nellie2's link i.e. install the modem drivers in safe mode?

Also is your system free of spyware?

This could be the cause especially with you being on dial-up, as there could be a dialler on there?

Have you run Spybot or Ad-Aware?

Just a thought!

Yes Curly....

There is a

VIA Rhine 11 Fast Ethernet Adaptor...

should this be enabled or disabled?

x

I don't know much about Ethernet connections, but I am under the impression that BT Voyager modems are USB devices!

What about disabling it and then trying to install the BT Voyager drivers?

You can always enable it afterwards if it still doesn't work!
