ronscores Posted April 23, 2005 Report Share Posted April 23, 2005 Hi,I previously had installed Win98 on C: partition of hard disk and Win XP Professional on D: partition of hard disk. As i had Viruses and trojans on Win XP version.. (reluctant to format..)I had deleted the 'D:\Windows' , 'D:\Documents and settings' & the 'd:\Program files' folders(which corresponded to win xp) from C: (ie. using win 98) then .. i installed Win XP (again afresh) on D: partition again (this time i installed the home edition). Now what happened after installation was I had 3 choices in OS choices menu which is shown on bootup.. It showedWindows XP Home EditionWindows XP ProfessionalWindows (---> Windows98)Now when i clicked Win xp Pro also it went to Win xp home edition and when i tried to repair this u saing win xp professional install cd .. I got a fourth option on the OS choices menu (Frustrating)!!This was Windows XP Professional Setup and it wont go as well.Now i want to do away with XP .. I have downloaded Gentoo Linux and plan to use it along with Windows 98Is there any config file i'll have to change to delete the contents in the OS choices menu?? and Will Gentoo linux be listed in that along with Win 98 if i wanna use both?? -pops- Posted April 23, 2005 Report Share Posted April 23, 2005 What I would do is save everything that needed saving (personal files and similar) then reformat the the drive and start afresh.I've found that each time I try and correct installation errors by merely trying again, the computer gets stuffed up with all sorts of rubbish left behind from the failed attempts, as you seem to be finding.I realise you've said you're reluctant to reformat but, sometimes this is inevitable and certainly the best way to go. benb Posted April 23, 2005 Report Share Posted April 23, 2005 I've never used Gentoo, so I don't know exactly what will happen. But for me, when I installed Fedora Core GRUB (a graphical OS chooser) popped up and I never had to deal with the XP one again. You should check whether Gentoo includes either GRUB or Lilo. Alan2273 Posted April 24, 2005 Report Share Posted April 24, 2005 Gentoo gives you a choice of Grub (default) or Lilo.You can try installing Gentoo on to the D drive and Grub should then give you the option to boot to Gentoo or 98.You can also change the boot order so it boots to 98 first as it will boot to Gentoo by default.Back up everything first in case it goes wrong.
