Printer Recommendation

Recommended Posts

My daughter has an Epson C82 printer. This is her second one. The first stopped printing (no ink to the heads ) just prior to when the warranty ran out and Epson sent her a new one. It is now a year later and this one is doing the same thing. She ran the print head cleaner and allignment program to no avail. This is the last Epson we will ever get as my wife's C80 did the same thing.

She needs a printer for school (she is away at college). Any suggestions on a decent printer that won't break the bank? Printing photos is really not important for her.

I use a Canon i850 inkjet and its superb. [Now replaced with new model]. I don't think you will go far wrong with either a Cannon or HP printer.

With HP printers, every time you buy a new cartridge you also buy a new print head as they are built into the cartridge, Cannon have the best of both in that you normally replace just the ink tank that has run out, then when required you can buy a new print head as well. :)

Avoid Lexmarks. The customer service is horrid and they refuse to write even proprietary (let alone open source) drivers for Linux, or let out enough of the product specs so driver developers can write their own.

I would agree with Djohn, and suggest a Canon or an HP.

Epson printers are excellent PROVIDED that they are used regularly. Dried ink in the printheads usually means a new printer

As Djohn says, get a Canon or HP if you are not using your printer in a regular basis (at least once a week). If you have problems then with ink clogging the printheads you can, at least, get at them to give them a clean or, if not, replace only a small part of your printer.

If your need are mainly for text or B/W, what about a low cost laser printer? These are very cheap to buy and run with the advantage there is no ink to dry out.

My wife has the Canon i860 (no longer manufactured) and is very happy with it.

Any specific newer HP or Canon models that you would recommend?

BTW: Here is some information on the Epson Stylus problems:

Looks like the c80 and c82 are junk.

I agree. I still have my original printer in use and it is over 3 years old and is still working okay even now.

It is an Epson Stylus C40UX printer and I think that the reason why it is still going strong is because it is used regularly and therefore the ink doesn't get a chance to dry out as you mentioned!

I recomend HP as :-

I have a HP Deskjet 960C on my backup system that is about 7 years old and a Deskjet 710C on my normal system, used daily, that is about 4 years old and they both still give good printouts in colurs and documentation.

My daughter ended up purchasing an HP Officejet 5510 all in one printer, just like my office printer. She liked the functions, speed and appearance and saw that I had no problems with mine. She is also able to clear up some counter space in her room by doing away with her flatbed scanner.

Thanks again for the input! As always you were all helpful. :)

PS Looks like I will be fixing her Epson Sylus C82 when my son brings it back with him this Sunday (he is going down to visit her for the weekend). So look for a used C82 printer for sale on Ebay soon (along with a used flatbed scanner). :P

Using an Epson Photo R200 at the moment excellent quality and no problems yet.

Prvious printer was a canon s450 which was fine for 18 months and then for some reason decided to flash amber lights and refuse to operate. :(

Printer before that was a HP deskjet 840, worked ok for a while and then refused to accept new ink cartridges (Just out of the warranty)

Think I'll reserve judgment on the Epson and give it a chance to last longer than 18 months
