Resolved -Hard drive ghosting

Recommended Posts

Hi, i've jsut went and gota new 300GB SATA HDD as a replacement for my old 80GB

The 80Gb has my windows isntallation and work saved on it and i would like to copy this hard drive directly to the new one

I have tried Norton Ghost but it hasnt worked for me - it keeps creating a errror message but I think it could be because of the compatibility issue wth Symantec products and Windows Pro x64

Is there any software which could help?

Thanks in advance

There's a variety of reasons why you might get issues like this and if you go to a number of forums you will find a fairly even balance of people for and against software like Norton Ghost. What I can say is that I'm running a mirrored RAID system with two 200GB SATA drives that are backed up by Norton Ghost 9.0 and Norton GoBack.

Due to a known issue with the motherboard (MSI Neo P2) and the SATA drives (Maxtor) I've had to rebuild the RAID system once, and on this occasion when the original drives were reinstated Norton Ghost performed perfectly well. Because I also try out a lot of software I have also used Norton GoBack many times and I am delighted with it.

What version of Ghost are you using and where are you saving the 80GB cloned image to?

I'm using Norton Ghost v9

I've got a 300Gb SATA

200GB IDE

and 80G IDE connected up

The 200GB IDE is just used for backups and and isnt really much of a problem

My OS and data is on the 80GB and I'm trying to use the HDD to HDD copy function in Norton Ghost to directly move the 80GB to the 300GB SATA

I get a error when its on the initializing mode (just before copying) saying something about a virtual drive driver missing

I've also noticed that when selecting the drives to copy from and to, it shows the actual hard disk size properly but when I click on the drive it shows the 300GB as being a 71GB with 14GB free and something similar with the 200GB (this is at the bottom next to the purple and blue boxes)

This is probably my most expensive upgrade ever and is definately causing me the most problems - cant wait to get it all out of the way and enjoy some happy gaming time :)

thanks for that link

the difference between mine and his problem is that he's runnign a RAID configuration whereas I've only got 1 SATA drive so thats not possbile for me

I'll keep looking at that forum for updates but if anyone on here finds a solution or a different software that I can use then I would be grateful if you can psot here

Thanks

Having looked at this again and considering the comments in some of the links I agree that this may be a 64 bit OS / 32 bit application problem.

I'm out of ideas at the moment - good luck.

Thanks, I've found something called casper xp

http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp/features.aspx

the free trial woouldnt be very appropriate as it creates a partion on the new hard drive depending on the amount of data being copied

If someone has tried the full version and tried it then please let me know if tis going to be worth the purchase

It says it supports SATA but nothing about Windows x64....

I have found very little or no support for Windows XP x64. Any programs that do not flat out say "we support x64" probably wont, and if they do, it's by luck.

**Not designed for use with Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

I believe x64 is identified to some programs as windows 2003. Perhaps this is not the right program for you. They have a trial. I would try it before I buy.

Presumably this is the 64 bit driver for Ghost needed by XP x64 Pro.

I also wonder whether, or not, there's an issue with trying to copy across a 32 bit OS onto a 64 bit OS, since I guess that this is what you had on your initial 80BG HD.

It's an interesting one this since I've thought about playing with XP x64 Pro but I think it might screw up my RAID system. I'm thinking that I might have to set it up on a completely different HD, say an IDE one and disable the RAID SATA setup.

Once again good luck and keep us posted.

the only OS I have windows x64, i installed it before getting my 300gb by copying the data onto the 200gb and then formatting and copying the data back over

that process takes ages plus after installation I'd have to isntall everythign again and its not worth the hassle

I guess if I dont find a solution I could leave my configuration like this

I havent been ableto try a RAID config because I only have one SATA drive but if I get rid of this 80 then I might get another one to mess around with.

My experience with x64 isnt all that great, the laoding up of the computer is much quicker but when it comes to running programs they all run the same as they used to on my Athlon 2000+, I am guessing this is because they are still 32-bit programs, the only 64-but thing I have is windows Media Player which comes on the Windows x64 disk

If I get Norton Ghost running or find another way I will post the solution on here

Thanks
