Whatever happened to

A few days ago we had the "Nelson's Victory over the French" celebration. We were, quite rightly, the winners, but, after all this time, to still be gloating (because that is what was going on) is racialism. The current inhabitants of America, most of whom are descendants of lately arrived "foreigners" have just celebrated the defeat of the British in the War of Independance. If this is not racism I'll juggle with loose soot. We are shortly scheduled to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE day and then VJ day. What other reason could there be for this, other than collective allied racialism.

Now we are going to host the 2012 four yearly festival of racialism . The original Olympics were a competition between individuals for their own glory. Now it is a case of individuals being selected to "represent their country", with countries spending billions of various currency units in order to produce "better" athletes (with or without drugs), so as to satisfy their own leaders egos. If this is not racialism of the highest order I'll plait sawdust. (The odd thing with the Olympics is that due to racial biological differences, that we dare not mention, some countries will always produce more winners in certain types of event that others.)

BTW: We had a splendid, if not magnificent, Independence Day weekend, as I am sure most Americans (of Italian, French, Russian, English, Dutch, African, Japanese, Chinese, German, Australian, Greek, Swedish <insert any country>........heritage) did. :Cool Smile:

I see nothing wrong with celebrating the anniversaries of the end of wars. Just think what it would have been like had the French won at Trafalgar, or the Germans or Japanese won a few years ago. With all the faults of modern society, things at least are better for these victories, and I am all in favour of celebrating these events. Regarding American independence, this one is a pity, because had things gone differently we would not be cursed with GWB. In the case of the Olympics, it is indeed a great pity that the event is now professional, and the participants will add to already gross and obscene incomes. I can see no problem however in representing your country, and making it a competition between country's, in the original games this was not possible of course due to the impossibility of travelling the distances to compete.

Whether I do that or not, it does not alter that fact that it is NOT sport in the true sense of the word as it used to be. It is now paid entertainment.
