-pops- Posted August 2, 2005 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 Welcome to the forum :) Using regedit can be very dangerous and, if you do it incorrectly, can wreck your Windows system.Think carefully before you continue with this. Please don't be insulted by my next comment but, if you need to ask what an OS is then I don't think you should be editing the registry. I've been working with computers since the 1960's but I always think twice about entering the registry and usually try to think of another way around the problem that is requiring my to do this.I see on your profile your have Windows XP SP1. Is this correct? If so, can you say why you don't have SP2? If you had problems installing SP2, then that is invariably a sign that there is something fundamentally wrong with your installed system and may explain why you are having your other difficulties. andsome Posted August 2, 2005 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 ive gone into the registry before, i know what im doing. now does anyone know how i can fix it so it will work?If this is indeed true, and you DO know what you are doing in the registry, then you will of course the last time you used regedit, have first EXPORTED the contents of the registry to a safe folder. I suggest that you open that safe folder and REMERGE the previous registry setting. This should solve the problem. If you did not export the registry contents, then unfortunately you do NOT know what you are doing in there, and should not have messed about as pops said. mrkrueger Posted August 2, 2005 Author Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 i didnt export cuz at first i didnt know what i was doing, i had to go in there when i was about 10 to get a game to work, and it worked fine then. now, it pops up for a second then closes down. also the text that appeared one time when it shut down said re-installing it may help. how do i re-install it? andsome Posted August 2, 2005 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 You have to do as Scuzzman suggested. Put in the system disk, and stop it from auto running. It's integrated into the OS and thus, the only way to check/replace its files ("reinstall") is with sfc or a repair install of Windows XP.Either way, you're pretty hosed without an OS disc. andsome Posted August 3, 2005 Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 If you don't have the system disc, whoever installed XP should have put a sticker onto the side of the computer with a product key number. I beleive that if this is there you could get a local shop to install XP again, using your product key if updating to SP2 fails.
