Shuffling e-mails about.

Over two months ago I bought a second hand Colchester Triumph lathe as a replacement for my old bigger lathe, which is nearly as old as me but more knackered. I am still awaiting delivery of a four jaw chuck whick was included in the transaction, and, as a result of much tooing and froing, the number of "potentially important" emails is growing rapidly. I wanted to move/copy them, for safety considerations, to another drive.

I can find no means of doing this. When I open up the new folder on H: drive, and the folder in OE, in two separeate windows, and try to drag and drop, they will tranfer (apparently) but, because most of them have "Colchester" as their subject/title, the fool machine wants to replace the previous one with the same subject/title, even though they are totally different files. I feel that there must be others who have trodden this path before. Has anyone got any wisdom to impart please?

I use Outlook rather than Outlook Express so this solution has been dredged from the inner recesses of my mind from way back. I just hope I have got it right.

Create a new folder and drag the messages into it.

Right click on the folder, click properties and make a note of its location.

Use Windows Explorer to copy the folder and its contents to another drive or partition.

I had a look at dadyassa's link, but could not find exactly what I was looking for, but allanho's recommendation seems to have copied the dbx file on to the drive where I wanted it.

Catgate, this may help.

This will backup ALL mail rather than each individual message.

In Outlook you can use the 'Archive' Facility to Produce a Backup of you Mails. This produces a pst file that you choose the name and location of.

This file can then be imported back into mail at any time.

This may also be available in Outloog express but I'm not sure.

Outlook Express only supports exporting mail to another program (Outlook or Outlook Exchange)

Do I take it from all this that all you uptodate persons, using XP, are using Outlook? Have M$ ditched OE?

I use XP pro SP2 with Outlook Express at home. (The company use Outlook at work).

Outlook is too cumbersome to use at home. However OE it is such a cut down version, and lacks quite a bit of the functionality that is in Outlook.

I think my link was similar to Alans idea, but without the right click bit which I should have thought about for copying to another drive :(

Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer, not Windows. It has been around since IE 4.0 (maybe earlier?) and will probably still be available in IE 7.0

You see what muddled thinking can lead to. I seemed to remember Outlook as forming part of W95, when I had that. I did not have OE but I did have one of the early versions of M$ Office. That's where the muddle comes from.

If I have understood the question properly, surely you can click on File/Save as, and save them to My documents, then put them on a floppy or CD.
