How on earth can you ease up on the use of your car when you live in an area where public transport is almost non existent?

Andsome. You are right, of course, about the need to use your car when public transport is inconvenient or even non-existant. But there are other ways to save. For example, I traded down my engine size when I changed my car, making sure it was fuel efficient, and, though I couldn't afford a "hybrid", I would have liked one. I would like to bet that, given the cost of fuel, mpg was a prime factor in choosing your Civic.

Actually it does have some importance, and I would not have even considered a gas guzzler. However the main attraction was the low mileage of 26000 on a three year old vehicle. The spec, SE Executive, leather seats, heated at the front. Full climate control, and several other points. Due to the poor public transport round here, most people have a his and hers car, us included. Otherwise we would be running each other many miles at a time to differing destinations, and have to go and pick up the other person afterwards. It is more fuel efficient, though more costly in the long run to run two cars.

The Tories sold if off cheap to the Oil companies, who still make vast profits from it.

The Norwegians kept control of their oil stocks and use the profits for the benefit of their citizens, not the oil companies.

Gas prices here in the States have been fairly stable over the past 8 or so years. Just like everything else in life, the prices were bound to start going up. ;)

Just filled up my wifes car plus a 5 gallon gas can...23.6 gallons in total for a whopping $3.50. :P

A regional grocery store we shop at now gives $0.10/gallon off per $50 purchase. This was our first tap in on the program and we earned $2.40 off/gallon.

As I said you just had to honk the horn. The red flag was taken out of commission a couple of years before I started driving.
