Hi, I'm using an old computer with Windows 98. I want to defagment but whenever I try it just goes from 0% to 1% and back. Anyone know how I can get it to work? I was told it's because there is stuff running on the computer and I have to somehow get around that to make the defragmenter work. Any advice apprciated.

Any of the above, also if you press these 3 keys down at the same time. Ctrl/Alt/Del. you can then close down all running programs except for sys tray and explorer, it will then run through the defrag with no problems, reboot and all the programs/applications you closed down will start up again. :)

The Mahler Fan Club......cool.

I wound up using the first suggestion.......i.e. defragmenting in "safe mode." Also downloaded Diskeeper but when I try to use it, I get an annoying message about the dll file (make sure it's registered, or something......)

Anyway, I did defragment it, but can't say I notice any difference in performance. I think this 'puter is somewhat buggered. Just hope it contines to work for a bit longer. Don't want to buy a new one right now :-(

Thanks for all your help :-)
