nikaeda
Hi, I'm using an old computer with Windows 98. I want to defagment but whenever I try it just goes from 0% to 1% and back. Anyone know how I can get it to work? I was told it's because there is stuff running on the computer and I have to somehow get around that to make the defragmenter work. Any advice apprciated. expertec
Start in safe mode and then defrag.Guide here: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,6156-1377929,00.html#saf :)
andsome
Download and install FREE Diskeeper Lite from here. Diskeeper Lite
-pops-
I agree with andsome's suggestion. Windows Defragmenter is basic and gives up at the first opportunity.I've use Diskeeper for many years on lots of machines and it's been perfectly reliable. djohn
Any of the above, also if you press these 3 keys down at the same time. Ctrl/Alt/Del. you can then close down all running programs except for sys tray and explorer, it will then run through the defrag with no problems, reboot and all the programs/applications you closed down will start up again. :)

-pops-
Sorry, nikaeda, I'm responsible for your thread going off track. How are you getting on with your defragmentation?
andsome
Off track again. Anyone who has never taken the trouble to listen to and understand Mahler's music is missing an awful lot from life. How is the def rag problem by the way? nikaeda
The Mahler Fan Club......cool. I wound up using the first suggestion.......i.e. defragmenting in "safe mode." Also downloaded Diskeeper but when I try to use it, I get an annoying message about the dll file (make sure it's registered, or something......)Anyway, I did defragment it, but can't say I notice any difference in performance. I think this 'puter is somewhat buggered. Just hope it contines to work for a bit longer. Don't want to buy a new one right now :-(Thanks for all your help :-)
expertec
Why not post a Hijackthis log? That might show why things are running slowly. :)

Your proposed itinerary sounded interesting and the flooding in Switzerland got it off to a good start. Rest of the trip OK?Thos.
