Backup/Imaging a Drive

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

:) :)

I want to buy a second HDD for my computer to use as a split partition drive and use one of the partitions as my backup drive, copying my entire work space periodically across. I was going to just use the XP backup utility but got to thinking about buying or downloading software to do a ghost/mirror image of my drive. I also have Nero and spotted that has a backup utility.

I am not too sure what is the best method and wondered if I could gain the thoughts and wisdom of the forum people on this subject.

Can you share tips and best methods for backing up an entire drive?

I am using about 15-20Gb at the moment.

Can anyone suggest good software for backing up in this manner? I had a look at Norton's site and could only find a corporate ghost edition.

Any thoughts and stories would be appreciated

Cheers

I back up to a seperate drive but to be honest I don't back up everything........ I have a program that backs up my drivers.......or I did, I was going to post a link for you but I can't for the life of me find it now!!!

Anyway, as I was saying, I don't compress anything to my backup drive but I do save stuff there that I don't want to lose, like game saves, documents, address book, favourites folder all my downloads etc, I usually do a re-back up about once a week. Probably not very efficient but I have the space and I like it like that.

Correction - I use version 1.3 which was free - the latest 1.4 now seems o be shareware (and ceases to function after 30 days).

I've got the old version if you do want it - but its a 2 meg zip :(

I use Drive Image 2002 for a complete back up of my C partition to E partition before installing new programs, weekly and monthly to CD. compresses down to approx 50% .

In case of problem installs, virus infection etc the whole system can be back up and running in minutes

Thanks all for the contributions, Boris i have Nero and the windows backup so thanks anyway for the offer.

Mark2 and Nellie2, Can you give me some advice and tips on adding a second HDD to my PC.

I am not sure how to format the drive and not sure about the jumper settings on the second drive.

Think i will go for Norton's Ghost software

Thanks

I am not sure how to format the drive and not sure about the jumper settings on the second drive.

Set whichever is to be the one you boot from as master, the second as slave.

All modern drives have their settings M Master, S Slave and C(or C/S) for Cable Select above the jumpers at the rear of the drive.

Well you have space for two IDE cables on your mother board. The main one is known as your primary IDE. The drive that you connect to the end of that will be known as your primary master. If you connect another hard drive to that cable then it will be your primary slave and you will have to set the jumpers as slave....But, if you stick it on the end of your second IDE cable then it becomes your secondary master so the jumpers will be set to master............does that make sense???

I'll put in a good word for you, Nellie2!! lol :D

I have a CD-R drive and a DVD rom drive in my secondary IDE channel so

I am going to attach a second HDD onto my slave connector along my primary IDE drive.

Just been on Dabs.com and priced some HDD's. I have a seagate 60Gb (7200rpm) drive. So I thought about getting a similar one. The have it priced at £64.50 which is a good price. But get this...I can buy an 80Gb drive by the same manufacturer for £65.00!! So If I understand this, I can buy an extra 20Gb for 50p!!! I know the architecture will be almost the same but it seems a strange price structure!
