D4\/!d
Hello, I wonder if you can advise me please. Our household needs a second PC. We have one with XP Pro SP2 and will be getting another XP Pro machine. The existing machine will be moved upstairs, whereas the new one will be put in it's place downstairs next to the Internet point. We need to be able to use the Internet (blueyonder broadband) on both PCs - how do I get it to work on both, and can we use the Internet on two PCs at the same time? Also (before we take the old PC upstairs) I shall want to copy data files to the new PC - again, what's the best way to do that transfer thesedays. I can recall plugging two PCs together and using laplink many years ago, but cannot remember how I did it and how I got it to work.I should be grateful if you would let me have your suggestions of what is the best way to set up this new machine. expertec
Probably the simplest way is to use wireless... as long as it's not an enormous distance and you don't have 6 metre thick concrete walls. :DYou'll need a wireless cable broadband router, and a wireless network card to put in the old PC.The router will be connected to the modem with a cable, and the new PC will connect to the router with a cable, while the old PC connects wirelessly. This way you can share broadband, files, and printers. You can transfer the files from the old PC to the new through the network.Yes you will be able to use the internet on both at the same time, but remember that they will be sharing the bandwidth so with both running the speed might drop a bit.Laplink... that brings back memories!
AlanHo
I did exactly what you want to do about 6 months ago - using specific advice from this ForumI too am on Blueyonder broadband and bought a Netgear Wireless Router model WGR614 plus a wireless network car for the computer. The installation of the Netgear unit is made so easy by the step by step on-screen instructions - it really was a breeze and we now have two computers and a laptop happily chatting to each other and sharing the cable broadband connection. expertec
noun: 4-wheeled motor vehicle; usually propelled by an internal combustion engineI think he means a card :DI should have mentioned in my post, we have a wireless network too. There are two PCs wired to the router, and one connected wirelessly. Soon we will be adding a laptop wirelessly as well. (I just need to go on eBay and find a "car" for it) :)
