My sincere apologies go out to all users of Neo Planet who have been unable to access all services related to the forum.

We have been offline for approximately 36 hours in total, and the cause was a hard disk failure.

The server crashed at approximately 0200 British time on Wednesday, and I alerted technical support when I came to view the forum at 0800. From my end, it looked as though a server along the route to Neo Planet was down, therefore unable to make a connection.

To make matters worse, I had to go to work, so was emailing to and from tech support throughout the day via my mobile phone, and being slower than a standard PC, I was getting frustrated.

The news came at 1000 that the hard disk had failed at 0200 while doing a standard nightly system check, and the server was unable to recover.

Because this was a physical error, a server admin was required to go to the server and attach a new hard disk. This in itself is a simple matter, however when you have thousands of computers, and multiple problems, it gets a little more difficult.

At around 1400, the hard disk was added, and then a further 8 hours down the line, the Operating System and server software were finally loaded.

Sods law then applied, I went to bed at 2300, and an email confirming the server was up and running and ready for me to do my thing was received at 2302!

Finally, this morning I gained access to the server, and after some six hours of working with a friendly server admin (not associated with the host), we managed to salvage the data from the old drive. While I was at work this afternoon, the server admin managed to rectify the remaining problems, and had the server fully operational.

The only thing left at this point was for me to bring the forum back online, however being at work, it was not possible, but we are here now.

Edit - webmail and all permissions fully restored.

Regards

Craig

Well, I would certainly like to add my sympathies and gratitude to Craig and others who have worked so hard to get us back online and with the site's archive of material rescued from oblivion. Thankyou.

I'd also like to make a point. While the site and webmail were down I had no idea whether the problem was with Neoplanet or my own system/ISP server. I found this quite frustrating. Could I ask that the admin team considers setting up a non-neoplanet email address which at least we subscriber members can contact, if and when such site-downs occur in the future, to at least find out what's happening?

Thanks

Jayno

This was done only recently, and we were advised via a thread in the forum. I immediately put it into 'My Favourites', and would suggest that everyone else does the same.

Many thanks to Craig, he has worked hard, and done an excellent job. I think that the server needs a sharp kick you know where. WELL DONE CRAIG.

Don't wish to be gloomy again, but the add a link facility is broken at present. I added the above link by pasting.

Touch wood, everything is now here to stay :)

If it wasn’t for a very helpful server tech that was willing to give me plenty of this time, we probably wouldn’t be here right now.

Has the facility to upload images and links been corrected? I could not show a link yesterday without actually pasting it in.
