catgate
When wearing spectacles we all generally look through the centre of the lenses most of the time (better definition) but we do look through other parts of them from time to time. In short we look through the centre mostly and the lens usage diminishes the nearer to the frame it is. This being so why do we not wear the lens away in the middle???Further more, why is it that, despite the fact that we are only looking through them, the lenses get covered in jam, oil, fly excrement, dog hair etc. (even if we do not own a dog)

Thos
Yes, catgate, it is a puzzle. And I am seeing through mine as normally and my grandchildren always say "How can you see anything through those dirty lenses?" Then they clean them for me and suddenly someone has put all the lights on.We can usually rely on you to point out the mysteries of life. :flowers: Thos. -pops-
Many glasses lenses are thicker in the middle to compensate for the wear in wearing. People that look hard at things have, correspondingly, thicker lenses. You will notice as well that those with thin central portions of their glasses always appear to have difficulty in seeing whatever they are looking at. This is obiously due to them having worn out the central portion.Regarding the collection of muck, remember those rolls of sticky paper that were sold ostensibly to catch flies? Well, the modern version for smaller scale detritus such as you exemplify are the vision aids that a number of us wear and call spectacles or glasses. She was only the optician's daughter but after two glasses she made a spectacle of herself. catgate
People that look hard at things have, correspondingly, thicker lenses. That seems to sort that out then. I had wondered about something similar in respect to hearing. Quite some time ago I had come to the conclusion that ear wax was nothing more complicated than dead noise, which had entered the ear, fallen dead on contact with the tympanum, and just congealed. It is perfectly obvious now that I was on the right lines. Older people, who spend a lot of time listening, mainly to the nonsensical prattling of youth, suffer more ear wax build up. Q E D ! andsome
Being varifocal, the wear on my specs is much more even. I peer through just ABOVE centre for distance, centre for mid range and the bottom part for reading. Regarding the earwax, it is possible these days to buy earole dewaxing fluid. A good hard squirt applied in a slightly downward direction usually does the trick
dadyassa
And ear hairs are just brooms to sweep it out then ;)
-pops-
The huge amount of sound the young put up with at these events called disco's and nightclubs is most certainly responsible for the build up of this substance and, consequently, hearing problems. It has somehow come about, though, that the deafness induced has selective properties such that any sound produced by the human voice that has any inference of something that is seen as unpleasant or negative (e.g. "have a bath" or "tidy your room") is carefully filtered out by the wax and thus not acted upon.
