Coronation Street and Emmerdale are compulsive viewing for a philistine like me.Don't like any make-over progs but I do watch Big Brother (to rant at) and Jungle Celebrity (in the sure hope that they will make fools of themselves)There are some good shows though. Bodies on BBC2 is excellent, Rome has started poorly but is worth watching for obvious reasons and there are some good comedy sketch shows (i except Little Britain which has outstayed it's welcome)Thos. andsome Posted November 10, 2005 Report Share Posted November 10, 2005 I could more readily accept soaps and make over programmes etc, and EVEN Big Brother, if this sort of show was put on in moderation. It just upsets me that although we all pay for our licence, the dumbed down shows are on in excess. Popularity cannot be used as an excuse. Just because a relatively high number of people choose to watch a programme, does not entitle those people to more than their fair share of programmes, especially on Public broadcasting. It could also be said that if more programmes were of a higher standard, then more people may choose to watch television. I don't know exact viewing figures, but assuming that say 18 million people watch a particular soap etc, then a far higher number are NOT watching it, from a population of approximately 65 million. How many people at that particular time are having to watch old re-runs of comedy from the days when GOOD comedies were being produced? How many more are watching their recordings of films etc which were on at an unholy hour the night before? How many people are watching hired video's or DVDs because they don't like what is on the TV? Even the few good programmes no on are being increasingly ruined by clever dic k camera tricks and excessively noisy soundtracks. Not everyone likes screaming pop or banging and crashing noises to accompany a nice garden scene or countryside scene. Some of Robert Winstones brilliant programmes have been ruined by this sort of mucking about. What is more annoying than an over loud soundtrack accompaniment, or grosely speeded up camera work, or zooming in and out rapidly? Rant over. r4may Posted November 10, 2005 Report Share Posted November 10, 2005 Quite agree andsome.Also will not bother about a HD Tv until my present one hits the graveyard as it is fine for playing Tapes and DVDs of films / good old programes as our current 'Live' program time is about 2 hours a week due to the crap they serve up. It is a sad fact that there was not half the trouble in society before everything got so frantic and noisy. All this load banging and crashing from kids who do NOT have the faintest idea of how to play an instrument properly, and all the bawling and shouting at each other in soap operas, coupled with the constant belching and farting, spitting, pulling stupid faces, and generally behaving in a juvenile manner on TV so called comedy programs, have all contributed toward a lot of the troubles in society.
