I read a letter in a paper today which suggested that the practice of reversing into parking bays at supermarkets and in car parks should be banned as it is time consuming, can cause accidents and is unnecessary.

I have always wondered why people do reverse in though banning it seems a bit drastic. The writer said that the practice IS banned in America, though I don't believe universally so.

Another annoyance, I find, is drivers shooting over the road when they see a parking bay free and parking facing traffic. Apart from the inconvenience when they are manoevering into the space, they hold up other traffic when they have to pull out again. I know in some American cities it is illegal to park facing oncoming traffic and it would be one law I would welcome here.

What about reversing out ??? same difference.

Parking on wrong side of road was illegal when I was in Canada in the early 70`s.

You must come to Spain for some parking lessons :D :D

It's funny you should mention that... my brother has a bit of an ongoing dispute with his local police about parking... their parking, not his! :rolleyes:

Reversing into places is the correct way to do it, as I believe the correct thing is not to reverse onto the major road.

At least the Spanish police park in the petrol station while they have their beer or coffee at the bar inside. :D

Yes, its not unusual for them to have a beer with their bocadillo`s (baguette)

When I worked for Federal Express, we had to take driver safety training (every 6 months) and it was a rule that we always back into our parking spaces for safety reasons. It is much easier to see what's coming when you are facing toward it than if you have to back into it. Especially true in residential areas with children present.

Had an incident here in the summer where a UPS driver backed up and ran over a little girl on her bicycle and killed her..

So sad. :(

Some police must think that the law doesn't apply to them as I have been keeping to 30 MPH in a built up area and a few times a police car has overtaken me at night after coming home from my afternoon shift.

How else are we supposed to use them then?

Besides if you drive in normally, you still have to reverse out and this can cause accidents as well.

I almost always drive into a parking space (shoping Centre Carparks anyway), as it is easier to put the shoping in the boot of the car. What ever way you do it, you have to reverse one way or the other, STILL holding up the other cars. also by the time you drive a little way past the space so you can back into it, some other pig will just drive into it anyway, then you have lost the space. :censored:

That's my view, too.

There are a lot of responses in the newspaper today and I particularly liked the correspondent who said that backing out should be banned as well as that would solve a lot of problems!.
