Cannot get rid of a prefetch file

Recommended Posts

I uninstalled Google Earth because of some problems I wa having with it and tried to reinstall it.

I keep getting an error message during the install saying I need to finish the previous install.

I did a search and the only trace of google earth is an exe file iin windows prefetch.

I cannot delete, rename or relocate this file and cannot therefore reinstall the program.

Any advice?

TIA and Merry Christmas.

Have you tried Crap Cleaner and RegScrub XP? Have a look in the registry, but export and save it first so that you can re-merge it if you cause any problems. Look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Looking Software in each of these.

I have tried all suggestions with the same results.

What happened when you tried daddyassa's suggestion http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110616 ?

Did the 0701 folder exist? Did you install the update?

Another question: do you have the latest install of Google Earth?

Also check out this article how to install the latest version of InstallShield: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322

1. The 0701 folder was replaced per previous instructions and installed the new 0701 folder/files.

2. I no longer show any traces of Google Earth on my machine when doing a Start, Search of "Google" or "Google Earth".

3. I have run all the programs previously recommended with no luck on installing the Google Earth program.......always the same error message.

4. I went directly to the Google Earth site and tried to install the latest version, again with the same error.

Well I got an answer from a member at the GE forum that worked:

Find this folder and rename it old.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield

Try installing the program again.

If that don't work search for folders called Temp.

Delete everything inside.

Reboot try installing the program again.

Try this. find your latest Google Earth download. Right click on it, run as administrator.

If that don't work right click on the install file again and pick properties > compatibility tab > run win 2000 mode.

Let us know if any of this worked or did not work.

Great!

Sadly they changed something in the Google Earth data. My area, which was crystal clear after the original install is now just a big blur. Unusable!

I got rid of it some time ago. It never did seem very good to me, except in highly populated areas.

My experience is exactly the opposite. At the time you first posted your remarkably clear screen shot of your neighbourhood, Pat, the view of my neighbourhood was an indistinct blur. Now, it is crystal clear. In fact, I printed off a picture of my small close of 14 houses and included a copy with each of my neighbours' Christmas Cards. As the detail was quite clear, even someone standing by his car, it proved quite a talking point.

But , in addition to that frippery, I have found it very useful. Especially when I went to France recently, pinpointing our holiday cottage to enable me to drive straight to it rather that mess around asking for directions in my limited French.

Thos.
