trackrat Posted December 21, 2005 Report Share Posted December 21, 2005 I need help with this one.A friend has given me his computer to have a look at, it runs Windows 2000 pro with service pack 3.When you switch it on it gets to loading windows then reboots.I have got into safe mode and done a virus scan and it shows Partition table (MBR) read errorBoot sector of disk read errorAlso there is a trojan on it ( Small.54Z) which AVG has deleted.Any help appreciated.SpecsAmd 750 Mhz processor10gb Maxtor hard driveThe memory is a strange reading 589,296Kb Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
scuzzman Posted December 21, 2005 Report Share Posted December 21, 2005 If it weren't for the fact it boots in Safe mode, I'd say it sounds like the MBR is hosed. Have you tried a fixboot and fixmbr in the recovery console (similar in function to the WinXP version)?Also, I agree, the RAM count is strange. How much RAM (physically) is in the machine? Scarecrow Man Posted December 22, 2005 Report Share Posted December 22, 2005 AVG cannot scan the MBR in Safe Mode as the drivers are disabled. This is normal.As for the rebooting, try my guide. I used it to repair an XP system, but should work with 2k? (if not the guide makes backups as you go so everything is "un-doable").Is un-doable a word? trackrat Posted December 22, 2005 Author Report Share Posted December 22, 2005 Update.Tried fixboot & fixmbr and no joy.I then went for an install and it asked me if I wanted to repair the installation so I clicked yes to give it a go and it is now up and running, the only problem I had was that i had to download a lot of drivers that it asked for of the internet as they could not find any of the motherboard or modem drivers.Hope that helps Boris.
