These apps can be integrated with various other languages like cgi, perl, php, and javascript, to expand Java's capabilities. Stand alone, java apps can only read files from the internet (not your computer), input and process from the mouse and keyboard, and display visual output. I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything.Doesn't sound like a lot, but this allows you to create games or movies, or applications like a calculator, or a welcome message to a website that changes every time, and the like. I tried uninstalling the older ones, and Java would not work. I think it's advisable to uninstall completely, then go online and get the latest version. I think possibly some files are retained from the older versions when you do a simple update, and removal of these stops the latest version from working. At least that was my experience. -pops- Posted January 8, 2006 Report Share Posted January 8, 2006 Before you do any deleting, artist, ensure you have a backup of your present system. I once got in a real mess on a machine while fiddling about with Java and its updates. It ended up that Java didn't work at all and a lot of other things didn't work properly either.Problem is that Java updates are quite large and when doing fresh updates, the old ones aren't deleted. If you delete them yourself you can be in the proverbial.I would suggest make your backup, delete all Java (via Add/remove) then re-install the latest version. If not, just download and install the latest JRE from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp. When asked, enable it for all browsers you have; after that, Microsoft VM will not be used any more.
