I meant that Catseyes were a great British invention

When I was a "boy chemist" I used to travel on the bus past Percy Shaw's works every morning, very often sat next to an elderly (to me) chap. One day, as we passed the catseyes works he told me of his greatest mistake in life.

He had been a friend of Percy Shaw's from childhood. One evening, when they were together with three other friends in a local pub, Percy was bringing them up to date on his invension. He said he needed £50 to get the patent etc. finalised, and asked them if they would like to "join in" with a tenner each. My travelling companion had said that he thought it would not "take off" and so he declined. The other risked a tenner. The others were now, at the time of his telling me the tale, living very comfortably as partners in the business, whilst he was travelling every morning to his job as a lathe operator. He was not bitter, just very sick at his own lack of belief in Percy.

I never know whether it is true and when and whether you are going off on one of your rambles!

Not a "Ramble" this time. Perfectly true. He was a nice "old" chap (probably in his late 50s!). I used to like to sit next to him because he smoked twist...probably what started me on it later.
