Take a sneak peek at Google's new interface

A new search results interface is in the works at Google. Originally the domain of rumor sites, it's now possible for almost anyone to get a glimpse of the new look. The existence of a simple trick that enables the interface for nearly any browser makes it all possible.

The steps are as follows. First, navigate to google.com (or whatever Google search server you use, e.g., google.co.uk). Second, paste this string into your address bar, and hit enter (and ignore whatever message it spits back at you):

java script:alert(document.cookie="PREF=ID=fb7740f107311e46:TM=1142683332:

LM=1142683332:S=fNSw6ljXTzvL3dWu;path=/;domain=.google.com")

Note: the sting must be a continuous, single-line entry. Additionally, the portion "domain=.google.com" should be modified to whatever Google search server you are using (e.g., google.co.uk; we have verified that this works with the UK and US servers... it may work with others). Third, search away. You should now see the interface.

You need to make sure that both lines are in the address bar - not seperate, and the first part reads "javascript" not "java script" (note the space). This is what should be in your address bar:

java script:alert(document.cookie="PREF=ID=fb7740f107311e46:TM=1142683332:LM=1142683332:S=fNSw6ljXTzvL3dWu;path=/;domain=.google.com")

Edit: I cannot get the "javascript" to run together for some reason...

It is "java script" two words. The rest is all consecutive.

I am not sure why everyone is having such a problem. Perhaps you will need to clear your cookies from google, and then try it.

It's simple:

1. Navigate to www.google.com.

2. Let it fully load

3. Paste the string into your address bar not the google search box.

4. press enter, or go and you are taken back to google.com with a message about your query. (see attached)

5. perform a search.

Perhaps it is because some of us have "browse by name" enabled, where typing a string into the address bar will return results from google. I do also have this feature, but it did not seem to affect me.

You will notice Google will add the 'keyword:' to the beginning of the search string, and therefore it will not work.

The quotes are required.

EDIT:

I just tried it again, and since I did not clear cookies, I was getting the same result as everyone else. I closed my browser, cleared Firefox cookies, and loaded google again. I pasted the string into the address bar, replaced .com with .ca and it worked.

You may need to use javascript, instead of java script. I tried both and both work.

You're browsers are looking for the word "Java Script" and that is the first link to come up.

I've also noticed these when doing multiple searches. I leave a Google tab open, and after a while this page will be my search page.

My screen shot shows the result. Nothing fancy :)
