Especially with DSL.Yes it is normal.What is ADSL?ADSL ("Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line") is a type of DSL. It works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two, one for voice and the other for data. ADSL technology can work at up to 8Mbps download. The most popular services in the UK at the moment are running at speeds of 512Kbps (approx. 9 times faster than a modem), although speeds of up to 2Mbps can be obtained. Upload speeds are 256Kbps on all products and hence this is why it is "asymmetric", because the download speed is different to the upload speed. AlanHo Posted April 21, 2006 Author Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 The reason I checked the speed was because I had an Email from Telewest advising that my new upload speed was 384 Kb and download speed 4 Mb.To be honest I cannot detect any difference when using Email or browsing - I assume that I might if downloading a big file - which I rarely do. -pops- Posted April 21, 2006 Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 I'm moving from 2 to 8Mb on Monday but they've been mucking about with the lines for a few weeks now with dropouts and when it returns, there is a short period of the new high speed.Anyway, like you, I've not noticed much difference when doing emails and such like but I did happen to do a large software download in one of these speedy periods and it just zoomed along.
