Talktalk low cost BB

Trouble is "She" reads the papers. I was going to wait a bit to see how things develope with the Talktalk offer. But after a little bit of earache along the lines of "do you realise that what with the Whiskey and pipe tobacco you consume you are also costing us a fortune with the broadband on "Your" computer. So after a quick look at the sums - I'm with Plus.net at £18.99/month for 2 MB and 15 MB web capacity. Line rental from BT £11 and about £10/month for calls (with Tesco). This approximates to £40/month.

Today I popped into a branch of Carphone in Newcastle while She was making some sound investments at M & S limited only by the number of bags she can drape on the handlebars of her disabled buggy. I've signed the contract. This amounts to a one off fee of £29.99 for the connection change and a monthly charge of £20.99. As all landline calls are free up to a duration of 70 mins (it is suggested that one re-dials after 69 mins), this should amount to an annual saving of £228. When the BB is activated I'm assured that I will automatically get the fastest speed, checking the BT situation reveals that my line should be good for 4 MB download speed. The monthly cap is 40 GB - the maximum I've ever used has been 2.1 GB. Webspace is 15 MB cf present 25 MB. The contract is for 18 months with a cost of up tp £70 to cancel.

Timescales are that the phone should switch in about 10 days and the BB in June.

So folks that's the situation, I'll add to this thread at each stage as it developes. If there are any questions that I can answer or should have asked just add hear.

Edit I'll even accept comments along the line of "you haematologically leaking idiot"

Thos, try this link for the BT Exchange capability just type in your phone no.

Exchange info

Carphone said they didn't need a MAC address they sort it all out.

I'll post at each stage to let you all know how things are going. There was an e-mail timed at 12:32 yesterday stating that my order had been accepted - I used my Direct Debit card in the shop - and that my landline switched May 2006. I was only in the shop at ~12:00

Thank you, Doug. Apparently my line will support 3.5+

That is interesting info about the MAC. TalkTalk web site says one is needed but Wanadoo aren't forthcoming, not immediately anyhow. I think I will do as you did and trot along to the Carphone Shop to talk to them. But I will leave it for a couple of weeks at least to see how you get on as I am off to Honfleur this weekend as a belated Christmas present from my eldest.

Thanks again, Thos.

Oh dear Doug! :0

Hopefully you'll be the first person I know to have a good experience with TalkTalk!

Good luck.

I have heard of a competitor to TalkTalk which offers a very similar package, cheaper for the first 6 months and only £21.75 therafter, capped at 2GB. If TalkTalk has such a bad reputation, Biscit is maybe worth considering. Not for you of course, Doug, but for others.

  • 1 month later...

Have just calmed down a bit and attach a copy of the missive I have just sent to the shop who accepted my order.

My name is John Chapman and I signed up to the Talktalk Fixed Line Service T3 Int and Free Broadband offer in your shop on April 24th. Your assistant Paul Bernard handled the order. He assured me that I didn't have to do anything else as The Carphone Warehouse would do everything required. He said the it would take 2 - 3 weeks for the phone line to change but the Broadband connection would take place in June. I received an e-mail that evening confirming the application and gave me my order number as xxxxxx. My telephone number is xxxxxxxxxx Invoice xxxxxxxx, Transaction xxxxxxx, customer xxxxxxx. I did point out at the time that my line was rented from BT but the call charges were handled by Tesco.

I received a letter dated 8th may ref. Acct. No. xxxxxx. explaining that the small delay in transferring the line rental was due to the exceptional demand. since the I have heard nothing from yourselves - no Get Ready pack or other communication pack. I have called at your shop a couple of times since - I did not keep a record - and was assured that the delay was due to demand but this was rapidly being dealt with.

I called at your shop, today, and the assistant made a telephone call then informed me that Talktalk couldn't make the change because BT had placed my line on Carelevel 3 and I had to contact them to get it changed to Carelevel 1. This was some form of security block. This was contrary to the information given to me when I first signed up.

when I returned home I rang BT and was informed that there was no such bar on my line. I then rang your office - I may have spoken to you - and was told that I had to contact BT and pursue the request. This I did and got no further with them. I then tried ringing your shop again 3 pm but I received a recorded message the there were difficulties with your connection.

I eventually managed to get through to Talktalk (0870 087 6627) and after much delay spoke to a human person and explained the difficulty. The lady made some enquires and came back to say that BT were being difficult and to get back and get them to make the change. This I did and was switched to several departments and was finally assured that there was no block on my line and the changeover would take place the moment Talktalk placed the appropriate order with them.

That is my present situation. To say the least I am extremely annoyed to be left hanging in the air like this to find that there appears to be difficulties and that Talktalk have not had the courtesy to inform me of any difficulties but have left me to find out by myself. It would appear that the situation is firmly in Talktalk's court. Would you please acknowledge this e-mail and inform me as to what is going to happen.

John Chapman

Edit I did say I would report on progress! :censored:

They had the bossman on tv yesterday lunchtime apologising that they had under estimated the people signing up situation. Similar to Dagwoood`s link.

It will get sorted but slowly.

Perhaps the bossman should issue an edict to their shops to tell customers what the real situation is rather than fobbing them off with fairy tales and blaming innocent parties (BT) for their foul up and lack of vision regarding the response this offer would produce.

Thank you, Doug for the up-date and I am sorry that as "guinea-pig" you should be put to so much trouble. By the way, I thought your approach to TalkTalk was a model of sensible, restrained complaint.

I hope it is sorted out for you soon and look forward to your next report.

Progress, I think.

Attached is the reply from the Carphone Warehouse just received.

Dear Mr Chapman

I apologise for the late reply, it was my day off yesterday and I have only

just recieved your e-mail. Firstly, I'd like to apologise for the problems you

are having with your TalkTalk package being connected. Normally it is a

straightforward procdure, but there have been some delays connecting the

Broadband. In several incidences we have seen problems created by BT, when

trying to connect some customers, as I'm sure you can imagine they don't like

to lose business. However, I am not trying to appropriate blame and have passed

this matter on to Paul, the rep who processed your request, with specific

instructions to chase the matter at Talk Talk's end and not to accept that it

is just a BT fault. I will do my best to ensure that this issue is resolved as

soon as possible and will have Paul either e-mail or call you with progress

update.

Yours sincerley

Jon Price

It would be nice if Jon Price could spell "sincerely".

It would be nice if he could spell JOHN.

Still haven't got round to installing a spell checker in FF, yet.

That's what caused me a load of bother, they make it FAR too complicated. I gave up on FF.
