Hi, I'm running on 256k/b connection but whenever I try and go download a file, it's being capped at 30k/b downloading... I'm using FireFox but Internet Explorer does the same thing. I've tried using online speed test and they've given me a result of 280k/b plus. I don't know whats the problem. I've called my internet provider but still no help. Please help me. I think sometimes wrong.

Thanks

I think you're getting your kb(bits per second) + KB(Bytes per second) a bit confused ?

I'm on a 2Meg connection and my max d/l speed is approx 250KB.

So on a 256K connection you should get a proportionally fast d/l speed - i.e. about 30KB

Quite often the download speed at the server is restricted because of lack of capacity, site being busy or just simple lack of speed.

I'm on 8Mb Internet connection but that is no help in me downloading from certain update sites where the speed is restricted to 224Kb (and sometimes slower). Nero is particularly bad in this respect.

I've just run Nero update which ran at 164Kbps and took over 13 minutes to download. When you're on high speed Internet connections, this is quite irritating. When I downloaded some Nero templates immediately afterwards, that went at full speed.

You seem to expect a lot from your computer running XP on 256MB RAM.

Could you please explain this as the internet speed is the problem.

I know that in this case the internet is the problem. I was merely pointing out that 256 MB Ram is VERY low to run XP. I hope that this point will be of interest to Mutechno.

I agree with pops, you should look into getting a download accelerator for faster speed. I personally use getright but there are many many differents ones to choose from. They allow you to do segmented downloads so in some cases you can get around their download limit by making another connection to them or even more connections. They also allow you to get segments from different download sites or mirrors. It has helped me out tremendously.

I'm on 8Mb Internet connection
Good God! Are you on fiber?

No :) 8Mb is the new BT (British Telecom) standard speed for ADSL Broadband.

The actual speed varies but I can usually get between 6 - 7.5 Mbps.

Only if you live next to the exchange, our max is 3Mb. :(

Not exactly next to the exchange but the chairman of BT lives just down the road so there is special dispensation for him - which we share in.
