A take-over of BAA has been on the cards now for quite a while, though the speed which this one has firmed up has surprised me. I believe that BAA own quite a few airports around the world, including Germany.

Spain is becoming quite a big economic force nowadays.

I do not believe the rumor that a well known politician has been spending a lot of time out of the country trying to sell the monarchy.

Would anyone want to buy it? A family of dysfunctional misfits bent on divorce.

They are spending all the British and German money coming into the country ;) ;)

I wouldn't want any of them free of charge thanks.

More money leaving the country.

Actually it is investment money entering the country.

Thos.

Forget the investment money, that value is here already, it is only changing hands. The question is where is the profit going. That profit, if it were entirely British owned, would be spent in the UK. (Ok, taxed then.)

If Ferrovial pay 10bn for BAA, that is 10bn new money coming in to the shareholders. Future profits will go to the Ferrovial shareholders and in these days of global capitalism, that will include investors from all over the world who have backed the Spanish ex-railroad building company until it is a major force. If you have a few bob, they might be worth an investment?

I know it is not as simple as that really, the take-over would presumably be paid in equity as well as cash and I don't yet know the detail, but global trading nowadays makes nonsense of international boundaries.

But if a country has nothing left to trade it would soon become a problem.

We have nothing to worry about. We can always outsource our debts.

I was talking of the movement of money in the financial markets---in other words, gambling, often with money you don't actually have.

Manufacturing goods for sale is a different matter and certainly one where I fear for our future.

What future????

I thought this was a serious debate.

Thos.

It is: But we have very little of our own manufacturing left and therefore very little future.

Exactly the point that I WAS being serious about. Having been a rep selling to industry, I would estimate that if I were at the point again where my annual turnover had reached more that £1.000.000, I would now be lucky if it was much more that £250,000. The largest part of my ex customer base has long since closed down.

I, as you all do, get concerned about the reduction over the last 50 years or more of our manufacturing base and the increasing reliance on the service industries, financial institutions and so on.

But to say we have no future is the utmost in pessimism and I am an optimist.

BTW, I see that an Icelandic firm is about to take over the House of Fraser. Cue for bouts of booing and apoplexy?

I posted a reply to YOUR OWN WORDS. You feared for our future, I replied to that. As far as I can see we have very little future when it comes to manufacturing. We used to be the powerhouse of the world.

I can't argue with that. As long as the developing world has vast supplies of labour, that is where manufacturing will go.
