Scheltes
Hello,After installing windows vista beta 2 my computer simply doesen't display almost anything, my screen goes black and displays a cursor and at the right bottom corner the following message is displayed: Windows Vista Beta 2Evaluation copy. Build 5384Can anyone give me advise how to solve this problem sothat I can enjoy the advantages of and getting to know Windows Vista? Thanks in advance. -pops-
Remember that Windows Vista is an experimental operating system and offered to the public purely for evaluation purposes. Please read http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=25631&hl=If you downloaded from the Internet, it could easily be that either your download or the copied version on DVD is corrupt.Having said that, have you tried another install? Scheltes
Hello,Thanks for your reply. If you downloaded from the Internet, it could easily be that either your download or the copied version on DVD is corrupt.Having said that, have you tried another install? In two instances I downloaded the 32-bit version of Vista from the internet. I burned 2 DVD's and from both DVD's I tried to install Vista, in both instances I got the same result. When booting in safe-mode I first had to create a usersname and than I had to choose the timezone. But still no display. I have no idea what is going wrong. andsome
I just don't understand why people are rushing headlong into trying out a completely experimental system on machines built for XP. Exactly the same problems occurred earlier, with many attempts to upgrade W98 machines to XP. This forum is already littered with instances of similar Vista problems. As I have already said, I can see little point in even installing the FINAL version of Vista, on anything but a machine built for the system. I know this doesn't help with the problem, but a search will show that already several people on here have caused themselves endless trouble, that only a full reinstall will solve. Let the real experts tinker about on spare machines, and keep your own running smoothly and sweetly on XP.
Scheltes
that only a full reinstall will solve.I performed 2 full installs both on a different partition from my XP installation. I created a so called dualboot system. And indeed your remarks didn't help me in any way.
-pops-
In two instances I downloaded the 32-bit version of Vista from the internet. I burned 2 DVD's and from both DVD's I tried to install Vista, in both instances I got the same result. The demand for this software has been unprecedented and MS have been having great difficulty in coping. We are experiencing extremely high download demand at this time. The wait time to start the download is very long and many customers may be unable to access the download site. To guarantee participation in the Customer Preview Program (to receive both Beta 2 and RC1) we recommend you use the DVD kit order option above.I know that this has resulted in some downloads being "less than perfect" with the result that the disk prepared from the download just does not work. This may have been the case with you.Alternatively, it could be that your burned disks are corrupt in some way. MS recommend that the disk is burned at the slowest speed of the writer to enable the best possible writing conditions:Using a DVD burner and software, burn the ISO image of Windows Vista Beta 2 to a new blank DVD. We recommend burning at the lowest speed supported by your DVD burner (1X or 2X) to ensure the highest quality. Most DVD burning software will recognize an ISO file. Both quotes from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

I will certainly try to do so. I burned both ISO-files on 2 rewritable DVD's. Could that be the cause of the problem?

Scheltes
I wouldn't even trust my shopping list on a rewritable DVD.Ok, ok. I got the message! As soon as I come home this afternoon I'll try a re-installation of Vista, after having burned Vista on a DVD-rom. I will keep you informed on the result. Thanks for now and greetings. Scheltes
I give up! To many problems. Vista on a DVD-rom did not solve the above problem. It was even worse. After copying the windows files setup continued with a blue screen with the following message:"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.MACHINE_CHECK_EXEPTIONIf this is the first time bladibladibla.....Technical Information:*** STOP: 0x0000009C (0x0000004, 0x80C41848, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F)"I have no idea what this means. Do you?I donn't know what to do next.

Surely it would be better now to do a complete reinstall of XP, and leave Vista alone until it is perfected, and you have a new computer built to take it. CurlyWhirly
As I have already said, I can see little point in even installing the FINAL version of Vista, on anything but a machine built for the system.I disagree as the minimum specs for Vista are here: * A modern processor (at least 800MHz). * 512 MB of system memory. * A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable. My processor is more than capable of running Vista as it's a 3 Ghz processor.I have 1.5 GB of RAM.I already have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics card (ATI X850 XT - 256 Mb)I just don't understand why people are rushing headlong into trying out a completely experimental system on machines built for XPI think it's because some people are curious as to what Vista really feels like (I'm one of them).I know that you can see screenshots of what it looks like but this is no substitute for actually having it running on your PC!I hasten to add that I wouldn't attempt this unless I had a backup to fall back on, which I have luckily enough
andsome
The point is that many people were under the impression that their computers were ready for XP having carried out the necessary checks, but quite a few ended up with problems. I strongly believe in the old saying that if it ain't broke don't fix it. If and when I need a new computer in the future, and Vista has been approved, then no doubt that that is the O/S I would opt for, as I opted for XP three years ago when I had this machine made. CurlyWhirly
I wouldn't even trust my shopping list on a rewritable DVD.I thought that it was because I burnt the ISO file on to a rewritable DVD, but I have since burnt it on to a DVD-R and it still doesn't work.I have therefore come to the conclusion that the download itself is corrupt as -pops- has already mentioned earlier:I know that this has resulted in some downloads being "less than perfect" with the result that the disk prepared from the download just does not work. This may have been the case with you.I will try one more time with another download and hope that this one isn't corrupt :( I strongly believe in the old saying that if it ain't broke don't fix it.So do I but as I have a backup to fall back on, I can be up and running again in around 30 minutes if something should go wrong ;)
-pops-
Don't forget that for a nominal fee you can get two Vista beta DVDs and a promise of the RC version by post, direct from Microsoft. The link I gave earlier has all the details. Much more reliable than downloading such a huge file from the Internet.

My computer is Vista-ready. I have checked it with the Windows Vista upgrade advisor. So I'm quite confident that the hardware is not the cause of my problems. andsome
As I said above, many people checked with the upgrade adviser before upgrading W98 to XP, and came unstuck.

Seshomaru Samma
My suggestion is another download, sadly Microsoft doesn't offere a checksum file or any other system to make sure the ISO is OK so it's a matter of luck. Take in mind that Vista's hardware detection is not great to say the least , I experienced many difficulties trying to get Vista to run on my Dell Dimention PC , it is finally running but to be honest I don't think it is anything impressive at all. It's security system is super annoying and it doesn't seem to to do anything that XP can't . The design is nicer than XP but not as amazing as I expected. If you want to try something really amazing , give XGL a try. It's easier to set up (providing your hardware is NVIDIA or ATI and you are running Gnome on Linux) .

-pops-
Considering the huge size of this download - all of which must be correct - it isn't really surprising that errors occur so easily. A small blip in the download of, say, a film, is not going to make much difference but with this it could (and most likely does) mean the difference between success and failure. This is why I suggested getting the disk version of the O/S where there is much less chance of error. djohn
Hello Scheltes. Did you use the download manager that was offered and recommended to use from the same page. It will look after the download for you and any interrupts will be picked up at the point of fail then continue.I and several others download it early last week and its fine. :)

I did not use the downloadmanager concerned. I used Download Accelerator Plus. I'll try to download it now with the downloadmanager you mentioned. Thanks for your advise. I suppose I have to uninstall the Download Accelarator first because automatically downloads are taken care off by DAP.
Scheltes
Hello,Even the official Windows Vista DVD didn't give me the solution for my problem i.e. no display. Since I have 2 graphic cards installed in SLI-mode I decided to remove 1 and indeed it seems that installing Windows Vista to a computer with 2 gaphic cards fitted will give the problem I encountered. Now I'm running Windows Vista Bèta 2 on my computer and sofar it looks good. Of course I run it a great deal more before I can give an objective opinion. Anyway, problem solved.
