Ecky thump

Tuesday is Yorkshire Day, when men and women from across this historic county gather to celebrate their... well, Yorkshireness - leaving outsiders baffled about why they have such a high opinion of themselves.

Brass bands, flat caps, whippet racing, wrinkled stockings, beef dripping with bread, pie and peas.

The above are just a few of the umpteen things associated with "God's own county".

Many people - namely non-Tykes - would say that, as well as being stereotypes, they're also reasons to poke fun at Yorkshire folk. But try to get a rise out of any Yorkshireman or woman by invoking one of the above and your attempts will fall as flat as a Yorkshire Pudding baked by a southerner.

A friend of mine from Huddersfield came to visit and my wife rashly did roast beef and yorkshire pudding. When served up he said with his usual directness that the yorkshire was enough to give him yellow jaundice! And we had enjoyed it all those years. To be fair, he and his wife suggested improvements which worked and my wife's yorkshire pud has been the envy of the neighbours ever since.

As far as brass bands are concerned, yorkies do not have the monopoly. I lived close to Sandbach in Cheshire and, in fact, went to school there. Now Sandbach is the home of the Fodens Motor Works Brass Band, conducted by Harry Mortimer, probably the finest brass band and conductor that ever lived. In my teens, I belonged to to an Air Training Corps brass band with an honorary conductor of no less a person than the aforesaid Harry Mortimer.
