Gates pledges to make AIDS his biggest priority

Monday Aug 14 09:58 AEST

Bill Gates stepped into the spotlight at the International AIDS Conference yesterday, vowing that the mighty cheque-wielding charity that bears his name would make AIDS its top priority, and with a special

Does this mean he has given up on the computer virus?

That of course is arguable. If we have chosen to buy a product then the money we pay is no longer ours. After all, if you cast your mind back to the days when you indulged in that four letter word W***, how would you feel if your ex boss said that he wanted some of HIS money back. :D :D :D

It might have been more acceptable if he had sold products that were, to use the new phrase, "fit for purpose", rather than something that leaked like a bucket and continually needed patching, and which were actually designed as a "consumer durable" rather than an "imperative disposable".

I think that most of the problems are due to the clever but idiotic people who keep finding more and more ingenious means of attacking Windows and it's ancillary products. No one so far has invented a completely foolproof system. They are all open to attack, and the degree of attack depends on the popularity of the system. If another system gained over 50% of the business tomorrow morning, within the week it would certainly be severely compromised.

Well I can't say Bill's made much out of me, as I'm not suffering from upgrade fever as far as Windows is concerned and none of my home PCs have ever had an additional commercial Microsoft product installed. I am rather impressed however with the way he's wielding his cheque book in this case, taking all those competing labs, each one defending it's own little patch. Then grabbing them by the scruff of the neck and telling them to cooperate or else. If his money gets a genuine coordinated research program up and running, then maybe, they'll finally achieve something.
