Training for this years Great North Run

Well today was a red letter and creaking joints day. Managed to do a 13.15 mile run. Had to be exact - measured by bicycle as the run itself is 13 miles and 192 yards. Went up past Beamish museum and back. funny day wet and sunny. Was very tired and took 2 hours 19 mins 14 secs. Disappointed as I would really like to do the Run itself in about 2 hours. Put the slow time down to training regime. Will be modifying it now to one long and one short run each week until the main Run itself on 1st October. Also have done a total of 335 miles since I started training this year.

The whole point about all this is that Doug and the thousands like him are doing this for charity, and are unpaid amateurs. Then we get whinging footballers complaining about what a hard week the have had if they have been called upon to play more than ONE ninety minute match. They are getting more in one week than most folk get in several years of REAL work, and are NOT worth a fraction of it. Well done to all the charity money raisers, THEY are the real champions.

I do agree with the thrust of your comments, that the people like Doug are the real champions but I fail to see the point of the rest of it. No-one is forced to go to pay money to see these footballers, rock singers or other "stars" and if they didn't do so the "stars" would not command their salaries. So in that sense they must be worth it.

Thos.
