catgate Posted September 8, 2006 Report Share Posted September 8, 2006 As a sequel to my posting NTFS/FAT32, elsewhere on WF, I am in a bit of a dilemma. Because the original computer shop, to whom this duff eMachine was taken, told managements friend that she would have to pay for a new XP because the product key would have disappeared with the MB, she opted for having her old W98SE CD dusted off and used. So I have eventually got it loaded onto her machine made up of old and new bits. As reported elsewhere W98 does not recognise her 15"TFT and I am having great difficulty finding a driver for it.However, whilst I was staring idly at the back of the eMachine carcass, desperately seeking inspiration, I spotted some labels which had upon them what I assume are Product keys. Boris Posted September 8, 2006 Report Share Posted September 8, 2006 As I discovered last weekend :( You will find that the eMachines Recovery Disk is locked to the original motherboard and the Ghost image on it won't re-install.Your best bet is to borrow/use an existing full XP Home CD, install from that using the original eMachines Product Key and get it re-activated.EditWhat Model eMachines is it ?I've come across 3 of them in the past week which have expired similarly - in all cases the mobos just went phut ! I know from my own experience with winmodems that trying to bend the will of linux to them is about as productive as ..... ...(fill in name of favourite politician).She and her husband have not yet got to grips with the idea of BB so the cost of a new modem seems foreign to her.What Model eMachines is it ?It was an E420popsIf you have a copy of W98 then you could install an XP upgrade which may be lower cost than buying a full version.I think the current panic is over because it suddenly dawned on me that that the MB CD might have on it a driver for a TFT monitor. So I installed the monitor package and now I can get all that a man could desire (from a monitor).well So it looks as though that is it for just now, and thanks all for your advice.
