catgate Posted October 1, 2006 Report Share Posted October 1, 2006 Tesco's announcement that it is to bring out its own range of software is interesting.We eat quite a lot of fruit, and sometimes we get it at Tesco. Their fruit is very average. About a third of it is under ripe, and rots from within before it ripens. Another third of the fruit is overripe and bruised so that it quickly rots from the outside. These will retail at "less than £20". Fine. Has nobody told them that a perfectly viable office suite and some of the best security software can be obtained for entirely no financial expenditure at all?I note also that they are in association with Accenture on this venture. You may recall that this company very recently backed away from the new multibillion NHS computer system.I know a few people with Tesco Internet services. It is, as expected, average.Personally, I have the Tesco Internet phone system (a sort of Skype) which I got for almost free on a sales promotion at my local store. It is, again, average. Another natural man-made money making racket!People who live in Spain get them ripe off the trees and we (in UK) get them hard and prone to rotting! I haven't bought any for months as to me they are getting worse (in all the supermarkets as well)!The supermarkets have driven the small business's out and replaced alot of products with crap. Corporate greed and control and look where it ends up! Poorer quality and money for nothing (especially if you throw them in the bin)...And what about all the waste? I worked for ASDA when I was younger, in one of their regional distribution centres (that stock the stores). I saw whole 40ft trailers full of beef tipped at a local council tip and buried! Milk that was reported to contain disease from the suppliers in the racking for 6months waiting to be returned to the manufacturer! <--- Botchilism I think it was? And this was just in the warehousing side of things. catgate Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Share Posted October 1, 2006 It happens to virtually all fruit, in all supermarkets.We have just thrown away two oranges out of a pack of five bought last Wednesday and three nectarines, out of a punnet of six, bought the same day. What the other three will be like, in time, I do not know. The three that were ditched were soft on the outside but were inedible because it was like chewing rubber. The stones had to be "cut out".Some of the fruit punnets have ribbons over the top, upon which is printed, in miniscule print, "Ripen at home", or "ripen at room temp. for three days then refridgerate"(or words to that effect).I am waiting for the ultimate marketing ploy which will be a bag of compost and some seeds in a pack labelled " Fresh Fruit direct off the Tree.......grow your own at home"Edit :=I have just found one of the remaining three nectarines has gone rotton on the outside but is still very firm. If more people did this instead of chucking the offending articles in the bin without any protestation then these megalith companies might start to take notice that they are selling crap.Anything from a supermarket that doesn't meet our full satisfaction gets returned. You can see the people at the Customer Service desks at our local supermarkets bracing themselves whenever the missus approaches. - she won't take any bowlocks from anyone.
