Spyware Cleansing.

Just been to do a clean up on a friends 2mth old computer.

281 instances of spyware, including savenow, new.net, lop, and numerous other less aggressive nasties, he's been running naked & unprotected, luckily only on 56k.

Only went round to install his scanner drivers. :o night mare time waiting for downloads 1 1/2 hrs for the drivers,

Glad I took Spybot round on my USB pockidrive, along with several other essentials, his systray was a mess 10+ icons in there, installed Avast A/V but I think he still has a virus there somewhere, didn't have time for an online scan to double check.

He has Systray.exe in his startup list in msconfig in XP pro, seem to remember from somewhere this is related to a virus. Not enough time to go to pacmans portal startups to check tho.

Disabled it in msconfig and he still has his Systray (sorry notification area in XP) :D I could be right about the virus :(

time for startup list etc next time I'm there.

I'm not going to let some shyster dealing in scumware cause a reinstall. Not if I can help it, also the endless cups of coffee he has to make may drive the point home better than a simple reinstall. :D

I think he's been an innocent abroad until now. Even shut down windows messaging for him too :D Still got to get sygate on there yet tho. XP's own firewall will do for a lttle while.

I'm glad he hasn't been buying over the net tho, who knows who would be using his CC details :(

Blimey........ you know I automatically do all my security stuff without thinking about it. First thing I do if I put a new system together or whatever is av,firewall, spyware killer etc.

You would think that computer manufacturers would issue some sort of info leaflet to go with their products.. so that those who don't know any better can at least protect themselves.

What is your link supposed to show us Powerless??........ or am I totally dim??

Well I have never looked at it like that...... but if you want it removed and other members agree well we can ask Craig to take it off!!

Personally I find it very useful... for example, if I am going to post a reply to a topic I have a quick look there and if someone else is posting to the same topic then I will wait until they have finished!! :)

last reformatted bout 4 weeks ago, installed all software and have carried on surfing etc as normal, I dont normally bother with ad-aware but saw this thread and gave it a go.....

found 3 pieces of spyware, all now consigned to the deepest pits of hell nicely burning!!

Whilst adaware can detect, it's also worth having Spybot S & D http://beam.to/spybotsd

It can detect things that adaware cannot and the other way round as well. Spybot however is (to me) more powerful as it found that my Winamp shortcut on my desktop was a problem.

How? I think it is because Winamp can send back annoymous usage statistics, but you can disable it from doing this. So be careful with Spybot.

It also has a few other things as well but i never even tried to use them.

do we not think that we are all a little paranoid?????

When i first started computing i never heard of such a term spyware...even a firewall...

Now their common!

I wonder whats next to come along are spark a debate. In a few years time i bet we all have Hardware firewalls. Much much smaller than they are today...

Paranoid? Well i have adaware and spybot and run them once weekly and it finds cookies and thats all...

Why? Because i know the internet (or at least i think i do) i know where to go and where not to go. I know that if GATOR pops up i know not to install it. I know that an advert selling something well you know...

I know not to give my ISP's email address to certain websites (or maybe them all?) I've learnt this because i've had a load of spam sent to [email protected] (my first ever ISP)

I know that clicking a porno site will open up a million windows taht keep appearing. I was younger then

You learn the way of the internet.

From what i've learnt i know what not to do so i do not get 99.9% of the things that adaware and spybot can detect...

Most of what they can detect can be stopped by telling people whats what. Or them actually tring it and they learn that way.

A computer Virus, Preview pane, Plain Text View etc etc...Well if you have Email and Malicious scrip detection then you are safe. The chances of you having all the virus's are xxxxxxxxxx to 1.

We've all learnt the tips and tricks powerless has listed.

But we never let our guard down as the advertisers/spammers learn more sneaky ways to invade our computers.

The new internet users are the ones suffering most.
