Loading problems

Over the last few days the forum has been very slow from time to time - but we have been told the reasons for that.

However - I regularly get a situation when I click on a thread - or try to open a new page - and the page starts to download but then sticks part loaded. I have to click on the refresh button, sometimes more than once, to get it to load fully.

Another problem this morning was I tried to start a new thread, typed it all out nicely and clicked on the Post New Topic Button - only for the page to freeze and then get lost requiring me to start all over again.

Is this me - or is it the forum.......?

The description you have given points to a timeout issue, however for this to happen you would be finding your self waiting 30-60 seconds before the white page is displayed.

If you are not waiting this long, then fingers point to another problem, and one you can see if you know where to look!...

Everything you see here is in an SQL database (a large database). It takes alot of CPU power to drag information from the database and then to display it here (process repeated when submitting information to the database in the form of topics and posts). The process is nice and easy for a computer to do, and nice and speedy when one person is using the forum. The process will start to slow down with the more users that are logged on, but this is to be expected and wont usually slow perfomance down to that which has been described.

What will generate issues is having more websites on our shared server that also use SQL databases as much as we do.

Unfortunately their isn't alot we can do about it, and this is one of the sacrifices we took when moving to a dedicated server.

I will continue to monitor the situation, and take action where needed.

In the mean time if you are having problems, you can check the load on the SQL database, usually anything over 2.00 will indicate that things are getting a little hectic behind the scenes and the system will start to slow. The good news is that the figures are in real time, and vary second to second and can fall dramatically. So, on the majority of pages, if you scroll to the bottom of the page and look at the right hand side, you will see a few groups of numbers, the one you are interested in is the number to the right of the "heart monitor".

If you find yourself in the situation that you have posted something and you get a white page, you should be able to hit the back button and try again (might be worthwhile copying the text you are trying to post at this point incase it fails again).

Thanks for the reply. On several occasions I have had the white page. Right at this moment things have speeded up again.

I've never had a problem yet. No timeouts, delays or outages since I've registered. Then again I probably get on at a different time than most others.
