CD icons showing as IE icons.

I have just built a computer for my niece for christmas, everything went well apart from a small problem with CD music files.

When I went to put some music files into My Music folder, I clicked Explore from the right click menu too see what was on the CD and the icons for each track showed the same as the IE7 icon.

As I have never come across this before I do not have a clue how to change the icons back to normal.

I have enclosed a screenshot, any help is much appreciated.

I am not sure this will work - but there is a remote chance it may give you a clue.

In Windows Explorer :-

Tools

Folder Options

File Types

Select the music file type you are using (.cda or .wma etc)

Click Advanced

A window opens with the option to change the icon

Try to refresh your icon cache.

Open the folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data

Make sure show hidden files and folders is turned on. Delete the file IconCache.db.

Basically this keeps a cache of the icons, so they do not have to be loaded every time they are displayed. Deleting this file forces them to refresh.

Just delete the file and go into my computer again.

What was that program he downloaded when his icons threw a wobbly ?

Was it favicons ?

Like andsome - I use the favicons program.

However - all it does is download and display the favicon icon off each web site - if they have one - and restore them if they throw a wobbly. This ensures that they show in the browser. You will see that Craig recently added the Forum logo to the software for this site so it shows in the browser address bar, browser tab header and your Favourites list.

I have just had another look at the favicon programme and cannot see how it would solve this problem.

You could try to right click one of them, go to open with, chose program, and select which program you wish to open them with, and tick the box apply to all.

I just tried that as an experiment - but the icon did not change even though I selected a different player.

On my computer - all music files use the same icon irrespective of which media player I use.

It worked on mine, I changed from Jet Audio to Media Player, and the icons changed.

Scarecrow man & Rong, tried both your suggestions and no luck, they are set to open in windows media player, but when you click explore they are still showing with the IE7 icon.

With these music files opening with the IE7 icon you just get it listed as track1, track 2 etc.

In autoplay when windows media player opens the titles to the songs show up.

Also you cannot drag & drop to another folder as it just creates a shortcut insted of copying to the other folder.

If this cannot be solved I will have to reinstall the OS.

It can be solved. A re-install is a very drastic measure for a simple problem.

I did have this problem once myself. There was a way round it, but I can't remember it.

Good to hear. I have a feeling a sfc /scannow would have done the trick as well, since most icons are stored in shell32.dll, which is a Windows system file.

But this was was much faster :D
