Where Do they go

Hi Guys,

I updated a program on my Windows 2000 PC and a message informed me I needed to re-start the PC.

I clicked the option to re-start and my PC crashed. If some further action is required after the re-start where are the files held in waiting for a re-start. My PC Starts and just waits there with out showing my desktop. It boots in safe mode ok and I can get to the computer via PCDuo.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated as I do not want to do a re-install of Windows and lose everything.

Best Regards,

Steve.

Hi There,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Un-forgivably I do not have a backup. I have tried a restore but still no luck.

I don't know what it is, the system starts up, the background colour of my screen is shown, loads PCDuo and then just waits there.

If I go to task manager my cpu usage is sitting at 100%

As mentioned I can boot into Safe Mode OK.

I have been trying to run a few boot disks with antivirus on them but no Virus's have been found.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your time & help.

Best Regards,

Steve.

Hi Steve

I'm not the most technical person, but having had a few problems myself, I felt I might be able to make a small offering.

When you boot in safe mode, is there a dialogue box with an option to restore to a previous point in time? If so, this may an option to consider. I did so numerous times whilst I was battling a problem with Norton AntiVirus.

Good Luck ;)

You mentioned a thing 'PCDuo' what is this? Also I wonder what is the software you updated?

Something during the startup is holding up your Windows system. Can you run the Task Manager and check Processes, then post which one it is that is running on 100% CPU?

I was updating Sytem Mechanic Pro 7 when it crashed.

If I look at the processes in Task Manager the two things with the highest CPU is winlogon.exe & csrss.exe taking 100% CPU usage

I have looked up csrss.exe on google and the was a lot of talk about it being a virus. I have run a virus checker on the system but no viruses were found.

Any ideas.

Your help is really appreciated.

Best Regards,

Steve.

おはようございます、Steveさん。

Let's try one thing first, from this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555021. Although this article refers to Windows XP, it may well apply to Windows 2000 as well.

If that doesn't fix the problem, can you try to boot into 'Last known good configuration' (from the same menu as 'Safe Mode')?

Hi Pat,

With a combination of things I have managed to get things working.

The main thing I used was MSConfig.exe which is a utility aimed at XP but also works for Windows 2000. Using this to clear some of the startup items I managed to stop whatever it was that was locking up the system.

My PC is not 100% but around 95% which is good enough for me to run some repair utilities.

My thanks to you and every one else who helped. Your time and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Steve.
