Beware the cheaper sets - even if marked HD ready - My adage is that you get what you pay for. You should go for a set with a picture resolution of 1366 x 768 minimum. My Toshiba happens to be the maximum of 1920 x 1080.Stick to a leading make like Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Phillips, LG and you will not go far wrong.An important feature is connectivity - decide what you want to connect now and in the future and make sure the set can do it - if you have cable and a DVD player then you will need 2 HDMI connectors. My set also has a miniD-sub connector to enable me to plug in my laptop and use the TV as a huge monitor.Take your time - study the specs - go see the sets in operation and then make up your mind. trackrat Posted February 5, 2007 Author Report Share Posted February 5, 2007 Thanks for that Alan, these HMDI connectors are they scart connectors or will I need to buy new connection cables that are scart to HMDI connectors, as I have a DVD recorder/Video recorder and a cable box to connect. There are plenty of experts on the AV forum who could help.My understanding is that only HDMI can carry HD video and audio signals - scart can only carry standard TV.I have a Telewest cable TVDrive which can receive HD broadcasts (such as they are at present) so must use HDMI. I also have an upscaling DVD player/recorder so again must connect with HDMI to get full definition.You have to decide whether you will be using HD signals either now or in the future and plan accordingly.Your other big decision is TV size - I had a wide screen 28" CRT originally and replaced it with a 42" LCD which looked huge initially - after 3 months I am wondering why I didn't go for a 46" set. The quality of pictures off the Telewest TVDrive is quite awesome and we no longer go to the cinema - the picture there in comparison is quite "fuzzy". AlanHo Posted February 5, 2007 Report Share Posted February 5, 2007 I am pleased that you are a happy bunny - there is no doubt that the current range of LCD TV's provide outstanding picture quality. It is a pity that the TV programmes - especially the soaps and reality programmes - spoil the enjoyment. I have no doubt that the future growth of HD TV will cause more and more people to upgrade to LCD sets. I have a standard Telewest box in the bedroom and a TV Drive in the lounge and cannot believe the difference in picture quality from them. But it looks so bulky sitting in the corner that we have talked many times of changing for an LCD. The trouble is that, though bulky, it gives a fine picture at 100 Hz. Absolutely no trouble and I don't know that I would want to pay the extra subscription for HD.
