The support is extended as the deadline nears and a new OS is not seen to be ready for launch. That is, if ever there is a new OS of this kind. -pops- Posted March 1, 2007 Report Share Posted March 1, 2007 Not a lot of importance, I feel.I have never used Microsoft support for any computer that I've either owned or built so the loss of this would have zilch effect on me - the same would apply to loads of others as well.My view is that when MS make these doom laden announcements that support for such-and-such Windows system will end at a given date, it's just a ploy to get people to upgrade to a later (i.e. the current) version. Don't forget there are still people using W98 quite happily (some members here) and I know someone who's not elevated above W95 yet. They don't suffer from lack of MS support and there is always plenty of support available for free from forums like this one.Regarding "critical security updates" well, what on the ball virus or other malware designer is going to bother forming their creations for out of date systems? Security updates won't be needed on them and Windows will have gone well beyond its Vista incarnation on to Vienna, Venice, or whatever pseudonym is next in the Bill Gates listings. Even taking that into consideration, most of my security software is not from MS, it's independent and I'll keep it that way having been grossly un-enamoured with the efforts demonstrated by MS so far. pa1916 Posted April 4, 2007 Report Share Posted April 4, 2007 Five years no big surprise as the Vista replacement is suppose tobe out by the third quarter of 2009 THEY SAY.10 year support i don't think so W98 WENT 2006 WME WENT 2006.W2000 now on extended support.I don't know how complicated Microsoft are going to make future operating systems hell just how powerful are home computers going to become?? i think Bill Gates should think about average people who can't afford £1200+ for a top end computer including the many 4 to five year old computers that can't run Vista and they will be left without support. Windows XP Home and XP Media Center, which were scheduled to drop off the support chart in mid-April 2009, were given an extension to April 2014.Indeed.
