Got a long weekend in a hotel on the I O W first though.It's mostly the freedom we like - long since got fed up with package deals. We're off to stay in a friend's appartment about 4 miles from Marbella for the last week in March. B) It's mostly the freedom we like - long since got fed up with package deals. We get to see friends all over GB without the hassle of booking somewhere or taking up their offers of their accommodation.I can certainly see the sense in it, for those of you who enjoy it. The only place left that I'd really like to see is Australia - but for about 3 months. Even then I fancy a campavan to travel independantly........ There are arrangements to be made all over the world quite independently.But I am not knocking caravanning. Holidays away from the usual routine are great. These days the net will have the info - if that's what you want.As you say, each to their own. andsome Posted March 5, 2007 Report Share Posted March 5, 2007 Since finishing the dreaded W word, we no longer feel the need for long foreign holidays. When the weather looks set fine we just have a few days away at a time in the UK. There are still many places that I would like to see abroad, but the thought of all that hassle at the airport again, fills me with dread, and 'Er indoors has got worse over the years with a fear of flying. We also did caravaning when the kids were young in static vans, and had some excellent holidays, but as with Irene we now prefer our little luxuries, such as en suite bathrooms etc, and breakfast ready for us when we want it, LOVELY. I can appreciate the pleasure that people get from cruising, but that is also not for us. It always seems to be too much travel, with little time left to explore when you get there. One of our favourites was to decide on an area, say in the USA, prebook a car for 3 weeks and the first night or so accommodation and then head off, spending nights in motels wherever the fancy took us. There was always something new and fresh to see.We also enjoy gite holidays in France, usually only for a week though. Nowadays we don't walk far though so we plan rather differently. I like Venice because it is very walkable and you are never far from the Grand Canal where you can hop on a water-bus and have a rest!Finally, last year we realised that we can get a luxury hotel that moves us around different places and all we have to do is get out and see these places every day. And so we got hooked on cruising. Not the big 2 or 3 thousand passenger variety with rock climbing walls, wave pools etc. but smaller ships with spacious suites and balconies, good food, no being conned for tips every step of the way and friendly helpful staff. So like Doug, we go SKI-ing as and when we can. (And meet, if only at a distance, delightful people like Irene)Thos. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
