having been nagged again at windows update as I dont have 7 installed.

I thought oh well try once again, so installed latest version i had in my program file.

Well tried, it installed sort of, Ccleaner says it is installed, programs says its not, but when it finished its install it said to go to updates and get updates but I only had ie6 when I tried it and they tried to install 2 updates to 7 but failed.

then automatic updates clicked in saying it had 2 updates ready to install and they turned out to be IE7 and they failed.

Now, when you install, it says to turn off Anti virus and anti spyware, so before I do that I disconnect from the Internet as don't want to be open without those 2, and it didn't install properly it seems.

I thought I would try it as I used win sop as someone on here advised and it repaired something, which also turned out to repair whatever was causing me to use double or triple downloads instead or normal.

Also as I dont use it unless on some sites where they trigger IE6 currently for downloads etc.

So what do I do?

1. get rid of 7 with Ccleaner and go install it from updates?

2. do I leave myself open and connected to the internet with everything off line that protects my computer, seems a bit silly

PS even as I type the littel yellow shield has told me there are 2 updates waiting - I tried these 5 mins ago and failed, so why is it still lurking.

PPS went to Microsoft site and they wanted to be PAID money to give me advice - blooming cheek.

Here is a link to uninstall your IE7. It means going on-line. so below I've done a copy and paste of the instructions. So you have a choice. :)

Note In this command, %windir% points to the Drive:\Windows folder. The placeholder Drive represents the hard disk partition that contains the Windows operating system files.

By default, the IE7 folder is a hidden folder. Therefore, you may have to make this folder visible. To do this, follow these steps: a. Open Windows Explorer.

b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

c. Click the View tab.

d. In the Advanced settings list, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

2. Follow the wizard instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 7.

3. After you uninstall Internet Explorer 7, double-click the Internet Explorer icon to verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored.

if I didn't get nagged would not bother as ie6 is good enough. :lol:

My email crashed and everything started to close down.

Usual for IE7 guess sit just does not like my computer :lol:

I use Firefox these days - great and it works fine.

Does anyone think I should try to download it direct once again from the update site and shall I then be open with all my anti's off whilst it installs itself, seems to take forever. Well 10 mins.

It sounds as though there is something fundamentally wrong with the computer, it should install with no problems at all. Unfortunately I am not an expert and cannot say any more than that. Best of luck.

It really is strange - haven't read much anywhere about problems with the download......

I'm not to sure about the why's and the wherefores, but quite a few people have had problems installing IE7 through Windows updates. What you could do is download the IE7 installation files and do a 'stand alone' installation. IE7 site

It does sound daft... turning off your Anti Virus and Anti Spyware, but as long as your system is up to date with it's security updates and as long as you aren't surfing anywhere or doing anything whilst the installation is happening, then you should be ok to stay connected with these programs turned off. Just don't forget to turn them back on again once you have finished.

To be on the safe side, make sure you create a restore point before you start anything, then you can always roll back if you have problems

Nellie - went to that site and downloaded - No 1 corrupt and No 2 corrupt. Didn't see installation files anywhere so just did a download.

Maybe that is the problem?

How do I find installation file?

I use download accelerator to download as it is faster and in 4 years or so have not had many problems with corrupt files, about once or twice, and on dial up, but with Broadband 256/64 as bit faster, still took 11 mins as servers all slow and only one average.

Have no problems with anything else - download, works.

I went to the site using Firefox and it doesnt validate with firefox.

So changed over to IE6 - which is a bit wonky these days due to being overwritten around 4 times with IE7 - meaning it is very shaky and looks as if someone forget to change the tape as light as if used up.

But as I didnt use its downloader no problem.

BTW for the second visit No 2 download, I actually restored back to before that last try installing 7. So then 6 looked fine.

Also did another WinsockxpFix as when I tried to connect it did but immediately fell out and then when it tried to reconnect got that same message as before with 7, that the phone book no was engaged. Weird.

Artist - thanks but your link was for people having problems downloading with IE7 - I havent got a working copy to date.

I have only one further suggestion, Lamb Chop.

You don't say if you Save to desktop (or some other place on your C drive) or install directly across the internet.

If the download gives the option to save onto your local drive, take that, then close down all open windows, including Explorer. The find the dowloaded file on your C drive, double-click it and let it install, following any instruction given. Then open up Explorer. There should be Welcome-type pages to choose your preferences etc.

Then hopefully, Bingo!! that should be it. ;)

I always save every downloaded program to the hard drive and install offline. This way you can download with the AV left on, and then turn it off when installing off line.

I have two files - one is downloaded files where my DAP places all downloads ready for me to deal with at leisure. Like I then scan them for anti virus and anti spyware. OK. Only after this and having shut down all open programs do I install. Usually with internet connected but not for IE7 as it says to disconnect the protection programs.

Then I have a second file called programs which is where I move them once opened and are there ready if I uninstall and then want them back again, this is because you 'ansome told me to some years back

Ok ready then to install the IE7, having scanned them as above. I shut down internet connection, anti virus, anti spyware, and then open and install.

Problem is as it installs it updates (it says) for ages it seems but I am not connected.

Also I must tell you this, when i went back to restore before trying to install IE7 last time having made a restore point as I do as I was told on here to do before installing anything new, see we do listen, I saw that there were several restore points made automatically, and how and when was VERY interesting as they were all AFTER I had shut down the computer for the night, IE7 was downloaded they said along with 2 updates all done separately.

Then I noticed that automatic updates was turned on, and I had it turned off so I do wonder sometimes.

Also as I said my email program crashed and all my settings on size of text were altered to small and spell check was turned off.
