catgate Posted April 4, 2007 Report Share Posted April 4, 2007 Management sent one of her friends an email a couple of days ago. She got a reply back saying, "Is big brother 'watching' us? At the side of your email are lots of links to bargain sewing machines, iron on labels, sewing hints and osteopaths, and Alexander for posture and pain. Never noticed this before - very unsettling." We are on Linux, on the machine connected to the 'net, so I doubted that we had picked up anything untoward, and a couple of test emails to other friends (yes, it is funny, but we have just one or two left) seemed to confirm this. That could be the root. As far as how it is being read I know not until we contact her. But thanks for the reply.Just out of curiosity...what is the point of using a 'free' email supplier? I don't recall it being linked to anything.The benefit of having a free email means that you are not tied to a particular ISP. My ISP is BT Broadband. I use Microsoft Outlook and POP3 to access both my 'Yahoo.co.uk' and 'Onetel.com' emails. I used to be with Onetel on a dial-up, so when I switched to BT Broadband I needed an alternative free email address. They have a very user unfriendly customer service and an even more customer unfriendly accounting system. (We were Off Line for a fortnight over Christmas and despite two emails a telephone call and a letter, to Charles Dunstane himself, I have stll had no refund of monthly 'paid in advance by Direct Debit' subscription.) Surely Onetel have not 'missed a trick' with your account?.They are most definitely not taking any money from our accounts. They would if I used the dial-up.
