I have often looked at that cat and thought it was showing the "out" gate.

The story of its use is as follows.

Part 1

We used to own Catgate Farm, which was not a working farm, but was what left over when most of the land had been converted into a Game Farm (pheasants, deer, peacocks, quail etc.). Hence the 'catgate' bit.

Part 2

A dear old colleague of mine, who was an engineer and draughtsman, was a particularly gifted cartoonist. (As I write this I can see him, in my minds eye, drawing mucky cartoons for the amusement of St Peter, just inside Pearly Gates...Bill's Daughter)

Very often we would spend our lunch time creating sillies. He would be drawing the picture and I would be composing the words.

On one occasion the story about the inventor of the "cat's eyes" had been on TV the night before. It was said that he had seen a cat coming down the road towards him in the head lights of his car and this had given him the inspiration for his famous and useful creation. Ronnie quipped that if the cat had been going the other way he would have invented the pencil sharpener, and drew a cat going the other way to illustrate the point.

Many years later Ken Dodd come out with the same story. I never knew if Ronnie's idea was the original or if they both came from another source. Anywayup, this reversed feline featured heavily from then on in most of our lunchtime creations, as did a dog with its leg cocked up against a gents leg.

When I first joined this august guild of computer lunatics I wanted an avatar that was not of the standard Forum Issue. One day, whilst going through some papers in a box, I came across a few of Ronnie's sketches and seeing the cat again realised I had found what I needed.

Interesting. Some time ago I met Ken Dodd. He was always seeking material and indeed he had a sort of form which he used to give out to people he met asking for his sort of gags. Perhaps it did originate from your friend Ronnie.

Ronnie never mentioned it! The period of the original cat drawing was sometime in 1965/6 Wilson era. He figured in many of Ronnie's cartoons of the time.
