Software Generated Reports - A Warning

Dear Members,

Please do not think that what you are about to read is a result of what any of you have done. In fact what you are about to read is what we don't want anyone to do.

Software, specifically software that can generate reports for you to view more easily or post online can sometimes include information that you really don't want the world to view. I'm not going to mention any software specifically but please take a few extra seconds to view what the software report has generated. You can easily remove any offending items such as personal names, IP addresses, Product Keys etc by simply deleting them. So when you do post anything that has been generated from a piece of software just double check that what you don't want posted; doesn't.

If you do post something that you didn't mean to, then PM a mod or admin and they'll sort it out.

Peace Out!

This will be an ongoing list, so feel free to PM myself of a Moderator to have something added or removed.

Things that you DO NOT want posted:

IP Address

Product Key(s)

User Name (unless you want to)

Wireless (WEP / WPA) Key

Things that are OK to post:

Computer Name

Workgroup Name

Software name and/or install path

And of course, if you are unsure if you should post a certain piece of information, please contact us.

I'm still trying to work it out, I never knowingly post anything that matters. I have never posted my bank account number 351178921, or my bank account pin, 6372, or 'Er indoors building society account number 7749021. It would be silly to. :D

If people post reports from things like, say, Belarc Advisor, there is a good chance that this will contain the product key of not only the operating system on that machine but all the other keys for the installed software. It would be easy then to obtain a copy of the software in question, download it, insert the cribbed (stolen) key and carry on. It might not be so easy with MS software and getting it to last but, there are loads more around where the security is not so tight.

There are plenty of examples if you Goooogle.
