On the otherhand BT are still shuffling their bits of coloured string about (we are getting a new main feed between the villages....eventually). It is still sticky and jerky, as though it was being delivered in small parcels. Management has been on to a couple of genealogy sites quite a while this morning and, apart from not being able to find what she wanted, everything ran normally. catgate Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Share Posted May 10, 2007 It is all very strange. The phenomenon seems to have disappeared. What was happening was that on say WF View New Posts the screen image built up slowly, in blocks, from the top down, row by row. The speed of this build up seemed to be controlled by the amount of stuff in the block. It was as though all the content of each block was being downloaded onto my HD. I am running Fedora Core 5 and Firefox 1.5 on this machine.Yesterday I fired up my W98SE IE6 machine and WF ran as normal. Must be this machine. This morning I have just fired it up and logged on to WF and all seems normal again.What's up Doc.edit:-Please ignore the above jubilation. As soon as I posted the above the problem returned. I must have slipped in between the guard electrons earlier.It has taken over 30 seconds to get back here to add this edit due to the problem.It must be something to do with the way this computer is reacting with the WF server. catgate Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Share Posted May 10, 2007 Off topic but, are you pleased with your new monitor, catgate?That's a very difficult question to answer.It is far and away superior to management's laptop screen, but never having taken much notice of, or used, a big TFT screen before I am not sure what I was expecting.What I can say is that is much better than I expected, but then I have not yet fully mastered it.There was an 84 page "Quick Start Guide" with it, in 20 different languges, that only showed illuistrations of the front of the monitor and the back and where to put the cables (as if you could get the wrong end in!!) There was also a similar 34 page booklet entitled Limited Warranty in the same number of languages. Where one is supposed to to put the saddle, and the bridle and stirrups, is not mentioned, in any language. Nor is there any indication of a switch for the built in speakers. I have been looking for one in the hope that that might make them work. Just plugging into the computer and using the onscreen volume control has no effect at all.However I look to the future with confidence and a stiff upper lip. I was a bit suspicious of the sound quality that would come out of such small speakers. I fired up the linux equivalent of winamp and it just happened to start up with Chris Barbers "Creole Love Song". It sounded as though they were playing in a fire bucket at the far end of a long corridor. Absolutely dreadful. I think I shall unplug it.
