Email receipts

Some time ago, maybe eighteen months or there abouts, on the old setup, someone, and I would almost bet on AlanHo or doug, posted an item about a system whereby a receipt was returned automatically when a sent email had be "opened", as opposed to a manual and optional "received" receipt.

I have done a search but have had no luck so far. Can anyone shed any light on this, please?

The thing I use is MSGTAG. Used it for years and find that I most likely could not manage without it.

I have the basic paid-for version in which the recipient doesn't know they've been tagged. The free version leaves a small message at the bottom of an email saying it's been tagged.

I recommend the paid for version. It doesn't cost much and it is a one off lifetime payment.

I must admit that I prefer the free version. The message that a receipt has been sent to the sender, prevents non receipt being used as an excuse for not answering. Very useful when sending complaint e mails to a company.

Ahh but, with the paid for version, if the recipient tells you they haven't received the email you can go back to them and state the time and date when they opened it. That's been useful more than once for me.

We will have to agree to differ. My view is that that could be confrontational, much better to my way of thinking, that if they know right away that you are aware of receipt, they are more likely to answer in the first instance.

We both agree however, that it is an invaluable program. :D

In Outlook, which I use, you do the following...

Open Outlook - Go to Tools - then Options - then Email Options - then Tracking options (under message handling), where you can check the boxes for Read or Delivery receipt.

Having looked at your link, pops, I am sure that that is what was posted some time ago. In the section covering compatibility Thunderbird did not get a mention, neither did Linux, so it lux as though I am out of luk.

Irene, the method you suggest requires the cooperation of the recipient. MSGTAG does the responding automatically.

an issue WITH MSTG is that it is evident ON the bottom OF the message; I had one from someone well-known to me a while ago and felt I was being 'watched'

how one can program OE to get a receipt WITHOUT the recipient aware I would be interested to know as I have a contact who delines to respond to ANYTHING I send and I would be interested to know if indeed they do RECEIVE the message or just throw it out

With the paid for version of MSGTAG there is no indication to the recipient that they are "being watched".

I have found this little program very useful because of this - not that I'm spying on people, just that some will try deceit and deny that they've had a bill of notice or whatever.
