Boris
Open SourceDVD Flick 1.2.1.1http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdflick/DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks as well as subtitles of your choice.DVD Flick is Open Source, meaning that anyone can download and view or modify the program's source code. It also means that it is absolutely free of charge. Several external programs are used by DVD Flick to do the dirty work like encoding and combining of video material. All of these programs are free, some are Open Source too.Supported file container formats are, amongst others, AVI, MPG, MOV, WMV, ASF, FLV, Matroska and MP4. Supported codecs are amongst others, MPEG-1\2\4 (XVid, DivX, etc.), Windows Media Audio\Video. MP3, OGG Vorbis, H264, and On2 VP5\6.
-pops-
Aimersoft Video converter is very good. Not free but was "giveaway of the day" a few days ago when I downloaded it. I couldn't tell the Forum about it as I didn't find out until there was only half an hour left on the offer. Not sure if it will do what you want, though. There is a free trial available. I've used it. It's very easy to use and had an intuitive GUI.Click here.

Coreper
i think AVI2DVD is the best solution: easy to use interface, nice step-by-step wizard
Scarecrow Man
It took me about 3-5 hours (depending on quality and length of the video) to go from an AVI to an ISO, but that was with a fairly slow computer. I used to set it up to run over night. I am sure with a faster computer, it would take much less time.

TerryDSmith
For subtitles support I can recommned either Handbrake or Freemake Video Converter. They both support hardcoded subtitles. if you want to rip DVD with subtitles, you can choose an option from the list availbale and get them as video overlay. Plus those softwares are good video converters. I use Freemake to convert my videos for PSP and rip dvds.
