Browser security is tangible and can be measured (if anyone is so inclined to allow their computers to be infected).

I was writing in the abstract. I don't know of a source of information. What I meant was that polls are for gauging people's opinions. Browser security is something that can be measured and thus not subject to opinions.

It would take a brave person to deliberately test the security of various browsers - not a thing for you or me but, I'm sure there are organisations that do this.

How can we know unless as pops says we measure it. Seems a bit of a daft question for a pole. It cannot be a matter of opinion, there are too many factors involved.

ok, i ran the ALL Tests on the browsers i use

here are my results:

IE6: no vulnerabilities

Opera [latest version]: no vulnerabilities

Flock [Photobucket Edition]: 1 medium risk vulnerabilitie: Mozilla XMLSerializer Same Origin Policy Violation Vulnerability (bid5766)

Description

This bug can allow a malicious web site to access your data on other web sites. For example it can be used to read you mail from a web mail system.

Mozilla is an open source browser. From Netscape 6 onwards, Mozilla's source code has been used to create Netscape browser. As a result, Netscape suffers from many of the same vulnerabilities as Mozilla.

Other browsers, such as Galeon, Phoenix, Camino (Chimera) also use Mozilla's source code and can be vulnerable too.

Technical Details

XMLSerializer object can be created by JavaScript code and used to serialize XML (or HTML) documents. serializeToStream method does not enforce same origin policy.

It is possible to open a document in a different domain and then use serializeToStream method to get the contents of the document.

Recommendations

* Netscape users need to upgrade to Netscape 7.01 or later to fix this vulnerability.

* Mozilla users need to upgrade to version 1.0.2 or later

* Galeon users - upgrade your Mozilla installation to version 1.0.2 or later and upgrade to Galeon version that supports it (1.2.6 or later)

* Phoenix users - upgrade to Phoenix 0.5 or later

* Camino (Chimera) users - upgrade to version 0.7

According to http://www.honeynet.org/ there is alot of problems on spam pages ASWELL!!!! as porn pages.

But in fact, all 300.000 pages they visited (with a unsecure version of XP sp2) where only attacked in IE, both firefox and opera where left outside :-)

Why do you assume that? What basis is a small poll on a forum to establish the security or otherwise of a browser? You may as well assume that if half a dozen of us say that black is pink, then it MUST be so.

It does really depend on how you're running the browsers, even firefox can be secure if you're running it correctly.

but if you're just taking about running it as admin from a fresh install then opera.

I personally use Mozilla as an alternative to IE when checking my web pages to make sure they're compatible with both browsers, plus (as you mentioned), it supports tabbed browsing. However, for the majority of my web browsing, I enjoy using Internet Explorer simply because I'm accustomed to using it.

That being said: the most compatible and most secure web browser for Windows XP is the one that has all of the latest bug fixes and updates. Regardless of which flavor of Windows you're using, you need to update your operating system (by visiting Windows update and a regular basis) and by ensuring that your web browser is up to date.

Like Scarecrow Man I also have noscript installed. The test won't run without 'temp allowing' or 'allowing' and then I get a "Medium Risk Vulnerabilities 1" - Mozilla XMLSerializer Same Origin Policy Violation Vulnerability (bid5766)? <--- What ever that is? ;)
